CMI announces 75 new jobs in Ballarat

09 Feb, 2010 12:06 PM
BALLARAT's manufacturing industry has been given a boost with the creation of 75 new jobs at CMI Industrial.

The company, which manufactures specialist metal and plastic products, today announced a $6.15 million expansion of its operations.

The investment will create 75 new jobs in Ballarat and secure the future of 70 existing positions.

A further 50 new jobs will be created at the company's Horsham site.

Regional and Rural Development Minister Jacinta Allan, making the announcement in Ballarat, said the government was supporting the expansion through its Regional Industry Investment Program.

''The support will see the introduction of new research and design activities, precision machining centres, and robotic and CNC machining capabilities at the Ballarat and Horsham sites,'' she said.

CMI Industrial employs more than 550 staff across Australia and New Zealand.

In Victoria, it has sites at Ballarat, Horsham, Campbellfield, Kensington and Footscray.

Now let's make sure the local people of the Ballarat region are given these jobs to knock the burden down a little bit on our dole centres. Let's not see these jobs go to Indian students or any other foreign students. That would be pointless and acheive nothing for the local community of Ballarat.

So an Indian living in Ballarat or Horsham isn't part of the local community Mark?

You know exactly what I mean Stuart. If you think giving these jobs to people who are not Australian citizens on a temporary foreign work VISA is a good thing then I can only assume you are one of these employers that exploits the foreign work VISA situation at the expense of the local Australian citizen community. I for one want to see our dole queue in Ballarat drop, not continue to rise because the local Australian citizens have been overlooked for a foreign worker.

Well said Mark. Stuart, not everyone living in Ballarat is Indian. Whilst it is great that the Indian community are getting work here in Ballarat, those of us who are on the dole are being neglected because we are missing out on work.

So you mean temporary foreign workers, not students. I agree the Federal Government was slow stemming the tide of foreign workers during the global downturn. But it still needs to be recognised that these 'foreign workers' often undertake work many on the dole are not prepared to consider. New employment opportunities can only go so far. Not until dole benefits are cut to a level that motivates people to work will some of these people in our society take jobs.

Fantastic news! My employer is hiring at the moment also. So good to hear in Ballarat for a change, instead of more people being put out of work. As for the comments regarding importing workers - I am all for employing local first, but I think you will find that there are some cases of unemployed in Ballarat who don't actually really want to work or are picky about the type of work they want to do - not everyone, but there are some, and if you can't find a local unemployed person to fill the spot, then where does the manager of the business find themselves?

I totally agree with you Mark, they should be given to some of the people that lost their jobs at Maxi-trans, Lyco, John Valves and Miric Industries.

I'm not an Australian citizen or on a temporary visa. Does that mean I can apply?

MARK - what rubbish! Employers take whoever is keen and skilled for the job regardless of enthnicity. Indian students don't qualify for government assistance or the dole. They work hard to get ahead. Why else do you think they drive taxis? No one else wants the job.

The old argument that somehow foreigners steal local jobs or add to local unemployment has been proven wrong long ago and is starting to get very tiring. It has actually been shown that immigration has a net benefit effect on employment because they increase demand for goods and services. If someone has a work visa or is a citizen they have every right to work in Australia, and the law says they are entitled to minimum pay and conditions. If anyone is aware of someone being exploited they should alert Fair Work Australia. In Australia everyone deserves a fair go, that's the Australia I would like to see.
