Committee for Ballarat calls for ideas

11 Mar, 2010 12:46 AM
DEVELOPING Ballarat's sports and hospital precincts, attracting a stronger workforce and connecting the city to the world were among the ideas that business leaders have put forward as important issues for Ballarat.

The Committee for Ballarat began its annual process yesterday to generate discussion among its members of what they see as the main issues facing the city and the region.

In six months, the committee will decide which ideas will become projects, and it will begin lobbying for action.

About 35 members have put forward their ideas, while a survey will be emailed to other members seeking their input.

Committee for Ballarat chief executive officer Doug Lloyd said responses would be collated in early April before a panel would discuss them at the committee's Round Table Dinner on April 13.

A final action plan will be devised in June.

The committee has previously lobbied on issues, including Ballarat's water security and developing the Ballarat West Growth Zone.

Mr Lloyd said the committee had renewed its focus on the Ballarat West project, to look at issues of health, wellbeing and social inclusion.

He said the projects selected took a three-year view and were updated annually.

"Our members are quite determined about doing something," he said.

New ideas put forward include developing Victoria Park into an Albert Park-like precinct (without the grand prix).

The committee also discussed improving car parking and traffic flow around Ballarat's hospital precinct.

It wants the precinct to be more attractive to professionals and new health-care services, taking advantage of its Lake Wendouree location.

Ideas, the Comittee for Ballarat invites from people, start by cleaning up the parks, give the youth some meaningful activities and areas to congregate in, look after people with disablities, maintain and improve the sports grounds. Offer financial incentives to local emplyers to take on apprentices. It's not rocket science.

Yes Mark exactly, they should be leaning on the Law & Order issue the most, if this is cleaned up even 30%, Ballarat will naturally grow faster than other places and be a great place to live. Dont upgrade Victoria Park when Ballarat is full of vandals and thugs, get out there and listen, many people are too scared to go out and "enjoy" public space. What exactly do the C for B represent ? What are their goals ? Like I said another time - it seems like an elitist, closed shop organisation, almost secretive and available only to higher profile people. Am I wrong ? I am happy to hear.
