THE owners of a puppy farm in Beremboke have come under scrutiny again after the Moorabool Shire Council raised concerns about the number of pigs living on their property.
Lawyer Mat Sherwell told a Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal hearing yesterdayntsa morningnte it was council's view that property owners Les and Melinda Paxton required a permit to breed the pigs on the property.
The Courier understands more than 30 pigs are being kept on the farm.
"Our view is that those pigs are intensive animal husbandry and require planning permission, and are contributing to the condition of the land," Mr Sherwell said.
The revelation comes after allegations the Paxtons were keeping up to 59 dogs in squalid conditions on the Marshalls Rd farm.
A raid by Animal Liberation Victoria last month revealed the puppies were being housed in dirty cages, surrounded by rotting carcasses, meat and their own faeces.
Two weeks ago the Moorabool Shire Council successfully applied to VCAT for an interim enforcement order restricting the number of dogs allowed on the property to just five.
A council inspection of the property last week revealed they had complied with the order, which included removing animal carcasses, rotting meat and faeces from the farm.
A second hearing to decide what to do with the structures the dogs had been held in was scheduled for yesterday, but was adjourned to April 22.
The Paxton's lawyer Greg Tobin requested the adjournment, saying he needed more time to prepare for the case.
Mr Sherwell said council was keen to have the matter heard as soon as possible as it was a public and sensitive matter, but agreed to the adjournment.
It is believed Mr Sherwell will amend the order currently before VCAT to include direction about the farming of pigs on the property, which he said was contributing to the poor condition of the land.
