A CONVICTED child sex-offender has been accused of having regular contact with a child without telling police, a court heard.
John Deruiter, 58, of Ararat, appeared at Ballarat Magistrates' Court yesterday to face one count of failing to report unsupervised contact with a child to police.
Deruiter was found guilty of child sex offences at Ararat Magistrates Court in October last year but was granted bail on appeal.
But he had been required to tell police if he had more than three days' contact with a child in any 12 month period.
Detective Senior Constable Guy Menhennitt told the court Deruiter had first made contact with the child concerned around Christmas last year, having already developed a friendship with the child's family since last June.
He said Deruiter had asked the child's mother if the child could work with him at a farm, to which she agreed.
He told the court even the most stringent bail conditions would not be enough to prevent the risk of Deruiter re-offending.
"If he was to comply (report to police) four times a day I don't believe that would be sufficient," Det Sen Const Menhennitt said.
But defence lawyer Erin Ramsay argued the risks of releasing Deruiter on bail could be reduced if strict conditions were imposed.
Magistrate Michelle Hodgson granted Deruiter bail, subject to nine conditions.
The conditions include that he is not to have any unsupervised contact with any children, that he report daily to Ararat Police Station and that he not contact any witnesses.
He will appear at the Ararat Magistrates' Court on April 12.
