Cr Taylor wants answers on failed Civic Hall project

28 Jan, 2012 01:34 AM
A REPORT on the $1.8 million spent on the failed Civic Hall project will be presented at the February 8 Ballarat City Council meeting.

Cr Ben Taylor asked for the report at last year’s December 14 meeting, when the council voted to drop the $40 million proposal to demolish the Civic Hall and replace it with council offices.

Cr Taylor said yesterday he was keen to see what was in the report.

“I want to know why we spent $1.5 million and what that was on, when the project didn’t go ahead,” Cr Taylor said. “If we were running a good project, it should all be well documented.”

Cr Taylor, who called for a community survey into the Civic Hall project last November, said he wasn’t surprised by its results released this week.

The survey showed more than 60 per cent of respondents opposed the project and 72 per cent were in favour of keeping the Civic Hall.

However, 57.4 per cent were in favour of demolishing the building while other options were identified.

Cr Taylor said the “crunch time” in the process for him came when an architect was selected.

“It was clear we hadn’t engaged the community, and we should have paused then and gone back to the community.”

He said the survey results should be used as the next step in deciding what should happen with the Civic Hall site.

But Cr Taylor also said council could still be involved on the site, just not as developers. “At least we need to set up the process so there is a foundation for the next council.”

"The survey showed ... 72 per cent were in favour of keeping the Civic Hall. However, 57.4 per cent were in favour of demolishing the building ... ."

That's a total of at least 129.4% of respondents!

And how was the "community" survey done, please? Random sample or "interested parties"? How big was the sample? Open questions or choice from supplied responses? Much more information is needed for us to judge the quality of the survey and, therefore, the reliability of the results.

So Cr Ben Taylor, wants answers today about the civic hall. Well what about tomorrow then Ben, will you change your mind again and spin the way like the Weather Vane is pointing. This joker has changed his mind more than his undies, on the pokies discussion before the last election , then spun the other way when he was bundled back to Council. We don't know what to believe with this bloke. This is an election year, and the Councillors, will all be running scared to be re elected, but it is too late for that we need a big clean out of the lot of them.

Time for Fletcher & Co. to come clean. Ratepayers foot their idealistic dreams.

Ratepayers have been waiting for the reasons why at least 1.8 million dollars was spent on this project when our paths, gardens, roads and other assets are in need of repairs or upgrades. Councillors have had to act after the negative opinions of rate payers was finally heard and acted upon. Get your acts together before next elections please.

Sounds like he is making another bid to reestablish himself in the political arena to me rather than looking to what was happening/happened. He was a part of the Council with access to the information. Why ask after the 'horse has bolted' so to speak. Why didn't he do this before? Not a good look at all.

Engage the community, Bendigo council has never heard of those words, send them an email and tell them how it is done.

Could have purchased the former John Valves site, and had a tangible asset, the potential for a world class sporting facility!! Maybe the Community would now like to have it at Victoria Park?

As a Councillor I would assume you approved this. After all there are plenty of Council reports there which you voted on. So, you were either asleep at he wheel, or now posturing for your own political gain. Which is it Ben?
