Creswick family's cover not paid up

Creswick family's cover not paid up

08 Sep, 2010 01:06 AM
MARK and Donna Patterson lost more than their possessions over the weekend, their world was torn apart.

The Patterson's house in Creswick now resembles a war-zone more than a family house, after flood waters wreaked havoc on Saturday.

There are holes in the walls, windows are broken and every single possession has been destroyed.

A caravan even ended up in their backyard.

Their house is among a string of homes damaged along Albert street, but has suffered the most damage.

''Within an hour the water ripped through the house and we couldn't do anything about it,'' Mr Patterson said.

In a cruel twist of fate, the family has had insurance on the home for 15 years but missed last month's payment and now believe the home is not covered

''You pay insurance for 15 years and you miss one month and this happens,'' he said.

''I've never not been able to put a roof over their (my family's) head.''

Mr Patterson lives in his home with his wife Donna and children Skip and Sarah.

Their house backs on to the river that overflowed.

They are currently residing at Creswick's Forest Resort, which is playing host to many that have been forced out of their homes.

The resort has donated a villa for a month to accommodate the family.

''At least now I can put a roof over their head for four weeks.''

GIO Insurance spokeswoman Monica Vardabasso said leniency can be given for cases such as the Patterson's but she could not comment on their case.

No Insurance = No Cover Sorry, but that is the way it is, interestingly the insurance company won't comment. I make dam sure I am covered ALL of the time, as most people do.

I dont want to sound uncaring but i get tired of people who after a disaster come out and sob ... we forgot to pay our insurance, i know how hard it is to make ends meet because i myself am on a pension but with these things you need to make sure you pay.before a disaster happens. With this comment i am not singling out these people because a person in my own family done the same thing last year and then they were burgled and had to learn their lesson the hard way by losing all their electrical goods so for goodness sake pay your insurance.

Don't mean to sound uncaring, but I actually don't care. Pay your insurance. Don't come crying to the media when something happens and you're not covered for whatever reason. I'm sick of hearing about people who end up getting hand out because of their own stupidity, or forgettfulness, or whatever. A lesson learnt...pay up or miss out

I bet they will be asking the public to foot the bill.

I totally agree.... "My stuff got stolen from my house and so did my house-mates things but because i keep leaving the front door wide open the people should help because the insurance won't pay"

No sympathy here either. I'm totally sick of hearing people whine about how they've lost everything when they haven't been insured. Take some responsibility and if you can't afford to lose it, you can't afford not to keep it insured.

thats a bit nasty dont you think , so many people around these days finding it almost imposable to make ends meet, i lost my job due to illness and can no longer work and barrly have the money for the insurance , im sure if your hubby lost his high paying job you would be in the same boat, not everyone wonts a HAND OUT ... just a hand will do.

Give it a go you lot.....Do you relish the idea of people loosing everything or something? IT IS BLOODY HARD FOR PEOPLE TO MAKE ENDS MEET...BLOODY HARD! NONE of you know why they couldn't pay their insurance...Maybe they needed to buy food for their kids???? I don't know these people but I do know that no family deserves this!

You're a heartless bunch, who knows why they didn't pay this month, it could have been any number of reasons, I hope GIO do the right thing especially after collecting all that money over the last 15 years.
