Creswick in running for Davis Cup tie: Australia v Korea Rep

11 Feb, 2012 05:53 PM
CRESWICK’S grass tennis courts could be the venue for a Davis Cup tie at Easter this year.

Mt Prospect District Tennis Association has lodged a bid at the invitation of Tennis Australia and Tennis Victoria.

Tennis Victoria has endorsed the expression of interest and passed it on to Tennis Australia.

Australia will play the Republic of Korea on grass in Australia.

This match-up has been locked in after Australia defeated China at Geelong and Korea took a 3-0 lead Chinese Taipei in the Asia/Oceania group.

Mt Prospect president David Hay said the Creswick-based association was one of two Victorian centres in the running, with Wodonga also putting up its hand up.

He said there would also be other venues around Australia making bids.

Hay said while it was a long shot, it was great to be under consideration.

Hepburn Shire Council, Creswick District Development Association, Ballarat Regional Tourism and Novotel Forest Resort Creswick have provided letters of support.

Hay said Mt Prospect had been invited to apply for a Davis Cup tie after Tennis Australia and Tennis Victoria officials visited the Creswick courts during the Victorian Country Tennis Association junior country week last

month.

He said the venue met the two key criteria – close proximity to an international airport and world class accommodation (the Forest Resort).

Mt Prospect has 16 courts, which easily covers the requirement of a stadium court and four practice courts.

Hay said temporary infrastructure would be required to accommodate 3000 spectators, and officials and players, but this was feasible.

He said association representatives had met with Geelong tennis officials ahead of this week’s Davis Cup tie and would be attending the venue again today for further discussions.

Hay said Mt Prospect had done a business plan some time ago with a view to applying for a Davis Cup or Federation Cup tie, but had been looking at perhaps 2015 or 2016 rather than the immediate future.
