 Cruise family gets Ballarat invitation

Cruise family gets Ballarat invitation

08 Jul, 2009 12:24 AM
SOVEREIGN Hill is laying out the red carpet for Hollywood "royalty" Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes and their daughter Suri.

The Cruise family is currently in Melbourne for Holmes' role in the upcoming horror flick Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.

The celebrity family is staying at James Packer's private Crown Towers penthouse.

They have already been spotted at the theatre, Melbourne Zoo and Aquarium to keep three-year-old Suri entertained.

Tom Cruise also spent his 47th birthday in a corporate box at the MCG with fellow actor Guy Pearce, watching Collingwood defeat arch rival Essendon.

Sovereign Hill has been in touch will the concierge at Crown and staff are putting together a Sovereign Hill hamper full of goodies with a formal letter from Jeremy Johnson inviting them to visit for a taste of Australian gold rush history.

"Over the years Sovereign Hill has played host to many high profile, international guests - from Eartha Kitt and Joan Rivers to the Queen and Prince Phillip," said chief executive officer Jeremy Johnson.

"If the Cruise family choose to visit Sovereign Hill we would offer them the same warm welcome and unique experience that we provide to all our guests."

Meanwhile, 3BA program director Garrath Cockerell said Pink's management hadn't ruled out a visit from the popular singer.

Last month Ballarat was awash with pink as part of a campaign to get the singer to visit while in Melbourne for her Fun House Tour.

The event raised $15,000 for the Ballarat Cancer Research Centre.

Sony representatives have passed on photos and articles from the day, and told Mr Cockerell that Pink was about to take a nine-day break from performing to go on a motorbike tour with estranged husband Carey Hart.

With eight more shows to go in Melbourne at Rod Laver Arena, Mr Cockerell is still hopeful there may be time for Pink to visit Ballarat.

Please don't encourage high profile Scientologists to come to Ballarat. Whilst it is great publicity for Sovereign Hill, Scientology destroys lives and preys on the vulnerable. We can't put commerce before morals.

I'm sure Sovereign Hill and The Courier have got more important things to spend time and money on than an over-rated weirdo like Tom Cruise.

I would be hoping the taxpayer would not be paying for a rich person to visit.

Hi everyone, thanks for the feedback. The invitation for the Cruise family is no different to what we would do for other high profile international guests. As Sovereign Hill is an independent, not for profit organisation the visit would certainly be having no impact on the taxpayer. Our aim is to increase awareness, not only for Sovereign Hill, but also profile Ballarat on a world stage. What better advocates than international celebrities? Sincerely, Serena Eldridge (Sales & Marketing - Sovereign Hill)

What makes you people in Ballarat so special? Get a life, all of you.

Hi Serena, I understand that you're just trying to do your job with the best of intentions. But Dave is right. Scientology is a recently manufactured religion that claims tax free status and wilfully hurts people in the process. Point your browser to www.xenu.tv and then see if you want to persist with your efforts to bring Mr Cruise here. Don't condone the Scientology madness. Bad things happen when good people like you do nothing Serena.

I don't think it really matters if they are coming or not. If they did, it would be a great thing for the tourism industry and for the fans (since I'm not part of either of those groups, it doesn't bother me much). But bringing Scientology into it may be a little off topic. It's not like Tom Cruise is going to bring 100 Scientology people to Sovereign Hill with him. And if he does, who cares? It's not like they're going door knocking on every house in the town. I'm not much of a Scientology fan, to me it's a cult, but that doesn't mean I'll mention them on an article about their visit to Sovereign Hill.

Ah Soverign Hill, nothing like an original idea. Too bad the zoo and aquarium beat you to it. Hang on, the attraction of celebrity to the gold mining historical town was your idea. Lola Montez's vist in the 19th Century was way ahead of its time and hopefuly this one would end the same way with an highly strung weirdo smacking a local journalist. Now THAT would promote Ballarat on the world stage and be for the benefit of the community.

Serena, I agree with you. This town needs some excitment. I hope they accept! And who cares what religion they are? Does it really matter?

Scientologists, Catholics, Romans, Seventh Day Adventists. Whatever cult they belong to what exactly is the difference? I was made to go to church up to age 10 and I was glad to see the rear of it. The way I see it they are all the same. Every single religion is the same -they all try and tell you how to live.
