A DEDICATED cycling officer, secure and sheltered bike parking facilities and filling in missing links on bicycle routes around Ballarat are all part of the plan.
The Ballarat Bicycle Strategy was adopted by Ballarat City Council at a meeting last night, the result of more than 12 months of work.
With the aim of getting more people on to bikes and providing better paths for them to use, the strategy details a number of ways to improve facilities and increase interest in cycling.
Consulting firm Arup was brought in to put the strategy together and was clear in focusing the council's attention.
"Council requires a major shift in its view and recognition of cycling as a significant mode of daily transport," the strategy says.
Better off-road recreational circuits and on-road training circuits, clear signage and maps, and a marketing program to target schools, universities and other parts of the community were other suggestions made.
