Damascus College campuses to join

28 Apr, 2005 11:43 PM
BALLARAT'S Damascus College will consolidate its junior and senior schools at its Mt Clear campus.

The college, which is the biggest Catholic secondary school in the Ballarat Diocese, with 1100 students, hopes to have a master plan completed by the end of 2005.

The project would see the relocation of the Year Seven to Nine students from the Victoria St campus to the college's 21-hectare site at Mt Clear.

College governors Father Adrian McInerney and Sister Veronica Lawson, who made the announcement yesterday, said the project would have a number of advantages.

"It is anticipated the project will take five or six years before year levels seven to nine are accommodated at Mt Clear," Sr Lawson said.

Fr McInerney said consolidating the junior and seniors schools would cut out teacher travel time and eradicate the need for two administrative departments.

"It's also because of the change in demographics in Ballarat," Sr Lawson said.

"This (the Mt Clear campus) is getting closer to the centre of Ballarat."

Fr McInerney said the school board had viewed three submissions from architects.

However, estimated costs for the merger and associated building works have not been revealed.

"The cost and design varies according to concept plans. When we choose a design we will be able to look at costs," Fr McInerney said.

"Ultimately, Damascus College will provide exceptional, state-of-the-art facilities which will enhance the teaching and learning opportunities for students and staff in an environment which is both safe and welcoming," he said.

Fr McInerney said the school board gave the single campus project in-principle support late last year.

Principal Tony Duggan said he was very excited about the project.

The college will seek funding for the project when a master plan has been developed.

Plans for the future of the Victoria St campus site have not been revealed.
