FORMER television identity Gavan Francis Disney has denied sexually assaulting a teenage colleague who he yesterday claimed was not a "quiet, retiring type."
The co-creator of Hey Hey It's Saturday is fighting accusations he assaulted a 17-year-old colleague while employed at Ballarat television station BTV6 in the early 1980s.
Disney, 60, was yesterday cross examined in the County Court in Ballarat for an hour, during which he strongly denied allegations he sexually assaulted the teenager.
Prosecutor Kieran Gilligan put to Disney that he knew the alleged victim would not speak out because he did not want to risk losing his job.
"I don't agree. (The alleged victim's) job was never under threat," Disney said.
Disney also rejected suggestions he sexually assaulted the alleged victim when he knew he would not complain about it.
He told the jury that if the allegations were true, the alleged victim would have said "no".
"I understand why he didn't complain because there was nothing to complain about," he said.
"I am telling the truth, (the alleged victim) was not a quiet, retiring type."
Disney told the jury the alleged victim was good at his work, describing him as "eager and keen", however he denied allegations he favoured the teenager and used him as his gofer.
"I didn't play favourites," Disney said.
He also said former Ballarat television presenter Frederick Fargher - who has given evidence against him during his trial - was not his friend.
Disney's wife of 38 years also gave evidence, describing the alleged victim as a confident and happy person who enjoyed work.
She told the jury that Disney did not give the alleged victim any special treatment.
"They were a team. They looked up to him and respected him," Ms Disney said.
A former colleague of the alleged victim said he took any opportunity to further himself and was always prepared to "hop in and have a go".
Disney has pleaded not guilty to two counts of rape and 10 of indecent assault.
The trial continues today.
