FORMER Hey Hey It's Saturday producer Gavan Disney has been cleared of sexually assaulting a former teenage BTV 6 colleague almost 30 years ago.
The County Court jury of three woman and nine men delivered its verdict yesterday at 1pm after a day of deliberations.
Disney, 60, was found not guilty of 10 indecent assault charges and two counts of rape. Last Friday, Judge Paul Lacava directed the jury to acquit Disney on three indecent assault counts due to insufficient evidence.
Disney was fighting accusations he assaulted the worker while he held an executive position at Ballarat television station BTV 6, now WIN Television, in the early 1980s.
The jury heard Disney allegedly fondled the complainant, kissed him and forced him to have oral sex after he joined the station at 17, telling him it was "all part of show business".
Disney denied any sexual interest in the alleged victim or treating him as a favourite. "He was eager, he was keen," Disney told the jury. "I am telling the truth, (he) was not a quiet, retiring type."
During the trial in Ballarat, Disney's wife Margaret said her husband did not give the alleged victim any special treatment.
"They were a team. They looked up to him and respected him," Mrs Disney said.
Disney remained silent while the verdict was delivered yesterday and once released from the dock, he emotionally hugged his wife and other family members.
He exited the Ballarat court building with his arm around Mrs Disney, telling reporters he was very happy.
The alleged victim said nothing as he left the court with his mother and another supporter.
