Dogs removed from Beremboke puppy farm

10 Mar, 2010 11:34 PM
PUPPY farm owners Les and Melinda Paxton have complied with an order limiting them to owning just five dogs.

The Moorabool pair were ordered by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal to remove the dogs from their Beremboke property after they were found to be running a renegade puppy farm.

An Animal Liberation Victoria raid on the farm last month found dogs housed in appalling conditions, surrounded by rotting meat and their own faeces.

It is believed that at one time, there were up to 59 dogs housed at the property, without a permit.

A VCAT emergency hearing in Melbourne last week granted the Moorabool Shire an interim enforcement order, requiring the Paxtons to remove all but five dogs from the property by the end of Wednesday this week.

"Council compliance officers visited the Paxtons about 6.15pm Wednesday night and found four dogs on the property," Moorabool chief executive officer Robert Dobrzynski said.

"This is in line with the VCAT order."

There is believed to be a fifth dog that was not seen by officers, but this is unconfirmed.

A second VCAT hearing will be held on Tuesday March 16, where council will be pursuing the Paxtons over the use of the land for intensive animal husbandry for pigs and perhaps rabbits.

Council is also seeking an order for decommissioning the excess animal-keeping facilities, including a shipping container, and a permanent order regarding the dogs.

I just hope that their compliance is monitored continually so as not to make a mockery of this whole process.

What a load of political ‘spin’ and avoidance of the central issues. What about the dogs ?, what about the eight years of overdue enforcement of the Code of Practice ?, what about the outcome for all the Paxton dogs who have died and been sold off ? what about the lack of action from the responsible legislated authorities for eight long years ? The Code of Practice has still NOT been enforced and there has been NIL impact for the welfare of the animals - it hasn't once been mentioned by Council, by RSPCA, by VCAT. Council is trying to hoodwink the public into believing it has taken action to improve the welfare of the dogs. Council has done nothing as it has done nothing for eight years to improve the welfare of the dogs. This makes no difference for the Paxton dogs. Voice your protests to the Moorabool Council and voice your protests to the media that have continued to cover this story. It is only with continued media pressure that Moorabool Council will be held to account.

But what happened to the other dogs and why were they allowed to keep 5. Just sounds like authorities have taken the easy route to 'get rid of' the issue as quickly and cheaply as possible. Am disgusted!

The Moorabool Shire/VCAT must remove and rehome all animals on their properties. The media is wonderful to keep a continued focus on this situation - it could become a ground-breaking case, and importantly increase the publics awareness of the RSPCA & Shire's failure to prevent cruelty.

It's not enough! These people should be charged with criminal offenses, fined (or better yet jailed) and banned from ever having animals. Shame on you Paxtons! Shame...
