A MAN was allegedly assaulted and the front yards of several homes damaged after youths went on a drunken rampage in Alfredton at the weekend. Angry Dyson Dve residents were left to clean up the mess caused by a group of up to 15 people, believed to be aged between 16 and 18, on Saturday night.Fences were kicked in and front yard fixtures broken along the street, and at least one house was pelted with bottles. Some residents cowered in their homes during the incident which began about 11pm and continued for about half an hour.Others arrived home later to find letterboxes or front fences broken. The youths are understood to have been at a party in the area before the incident happened. One man, who did not want to be identified, went to confront a youth who had broken part of his front fence. But when he got outside, three other people emerged and allegedly punched him in the face and upper body before he managed to get back to his house. The youths continued to shout abuse and throw bottles at the house before police arrived.Resident John Furness said he and his wife Dianne heard a loud bang when they were going to bed just after 11pm."On the first occasion we thought (it) was an accident. But then they continued for about three or four goes," Rev Furness said."My wife got to the door and shouted to whoever it was that she'd called the police and they better move, which they did.""But then of course they went further up the street and wrought havoc ... it was quite frightening." Six panels of a fence had been damaged in the attacks, but he said the attitude of the group was the most disappointing aspect of the incident."It's almost as if they're saying `What rights have you got spoiling our fun?' "Ballarat Police Acting Sergeant Adam Grant said yesterday no charges had been laid over the incident.
