Earth Hour: hundreds attend Ballarat Acoustic Music Festival

28 Mar, 2010 12:02 AM
ALMOST 300 people turned out to celebrate Earth Hour on Saturday night at the inaugural Ballarat Acoustic Music Festival.

The festival took in three venues in Ballarat's CBD with an impressive line-up of mostly local acts.

Venues for the event were the Art Gallery of Ballarat, the Masterfoods Performance Space and The Basement Studios in Doveton St.

All performances were completely acoustic, with no microphones or amplification. Lighting was solar powered or candlelight.

Festival organiser Mick Trembath described the festival as "a fantastic night with everything flowing perfectly".

"The intimacy and the respect in the venues during the performances was extraordinary," Mr Trembath said.

"People just sat in reverent silence and were absolutely focused on the music.

The atmosphere brought out the best in audience appreciation and the musicians' performances according to Mr Trembath.

"One of the best things for us was to see an audience leave a venue at midnight with no alcohol having been consumed. Everybody was in a happy, generous, giving mood."

"All of the venues were right in the middle of the CBD and there was not a cross word or a single problem."

The night revealed the amazing depth and talent of Ballarat's performers Mr Trembath said adding a sense of pride to the event.

"This was just the calmest, gentlest festival and it showed there is definitely no correlation between live music and violence."

Solar powered at night? Well there are these things called batteries - you put out the solar powered device in the sun all day, and then they radiate light all night. Works really well - all my outside party lights work this way! Fantastic event Mick T! Keep up the good work! JL
