A MARYBOROUGH woman died after a gum tree fell on her at a school as wild weather tore through the region yesterday.
The 49-year-old woman, whose identity has not yet been released, was walking across a basketball court with a family member at Highview Christian Community College in Kars St about 3.30pm when
she was hit by the tree.
She suffered from multiple fractures and went into cardiac arrest.
Maryborough paramedics treated the woman and transported her to hospital in a critical condition.
It is believed the tree fell on the woman due to severe storm conditions in the area.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Stephen King said winds reached up to 100kmh in the Maryborough area yesterday afternoon.
He said the blustery weather swept across the state due to a low pressure system in the Southern Ocean.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner on the Maryborough woman's death.
In Ballarat wind gusts weren't as strong reaching up to about 83kmh.
Ballarat State Emergency Service said it attended up to 30 jobs yesterday afternoon and sent a team to help out in Maryborough.

"It was a pretty violent gust that went through about 3.30 to 4pm," SES Regional duty officer Doc Doherty said.
"There was a lot of trees (down), a lot of roof damage."
Mr Doherty said about 20 members attended the call-outs across the region including Ararat, Stawell, Horsham, Dimboola, Rupanyup, St Arnaud, Warracknabeal and Bacchus Marsh.
A number of residents also lost power because of the gusty weather.
Almost 600 Powercor customers were affected in Maryborough, while more than 1200 lost power in Ararat.
Powercor spokesman Ryan Auger said Ballarat dodged the worst conditions with just over 60 customers affected.
