Fire crews battle bushfire around Waubra

29 Jan, 2012 12:52 PM
FIRE crews were still mopping up the Mt Beckworth blaze in the morning, 17-hours after a lighting strike charred 64 hectares near Waubra.

More than twenty trucks and 120 fire crew fought for four hours on Saturday to control the fire.

Country Fire Authority Ballarat Group of Fire Brigade officer Phillip Wilson said the fire was lit by a lightening strike.

"We got the call out at 4.46 pm," Mr Wilson said.

"The lightening struck Mt Beckworth and sparks from there (lit the grasslands)."

The fire, he said, had nearly been controlled at the grasslands but was still going on the mountain.

"We have got fire trucks from Beaufort, Ballarat, Creswick and Talbot," he said.

"One crane, a helitack and an air observer are also on the scene."

However, Mr Wilson said no lives were at risk and no one had been evacuated.

"This is one of the most isolated area," he said.

"This is our second major fire in the season.

"It is has been a quiet fire season and we would be kidding ourselves if we got through without a fire around the area."

Six Victoria police units, including from Avoca, Buninyong, Lexton were also at the scene.

It's a bit humbling to know that while I was fiddling around with getting the barbecue ready for dinner, the CFA volunteers were out there working so hard.

Best wishes to all the CFA/DSE out there fighting this fire. Hope everyone is safe.

But will the wind farm opposers say the turbines caused it on such a windy day? Wouldn't suprize me!
