SNOW-COVERED hills surrounding Ballarat were a welcoming sight for children on school holidays yesterday.
Parts of central Victoria shivered through a cold snap, including Dunnstown, Gordon, Mt Egerton and Warrenheip, where snow fell early in the morning and settled on the ground.
Snow thickened on Mt Warrenheip's ascent, where people were driving to the top to peer down on the white blanket.
Others parked their cars at Kryal Castle to get a glimpse and roll snowballs.
Children in Gordon found the perfect hill at St Patrick's Primary School to slide down on their boogie boards.
Others played at the front of St Patrick's Catholic Church and made tracks in the 5cm thick snow.
Jesse Bollen, nine, was tobogganing on the school's oval when The Courier approached him.
He said his mother opened the front door at 7.30am to show him and his three siblings the snow.
"I played in the snow for an hour. It's fantastic but it's really cold," Jesse said.
The snow cleared on the hills about midday, but the temperatures remained low.
In other parts of the region, including Lal Lal and Yendon, snow did not settle on the ground, but rain was constant in the morning.
Snow was also seen at Daylesford, mounts Buninyong and Macedon, Spargo Creek and Trentham.
