Flood victims told not to suffer in silence

09 Sep, 2010 02:43 AM
RECOVERY centres in Creswick and Clunes continue to help people affected by recent floods, but many residents are yet to visit the centres for help.

Hepburn Shire Council emergency management planning committee chairman Bill McClenaghan said a number of people were yet to report to recovery centres.

''For whatever reason you'll find people who choose not to attend,'' Cr McClenaghan said.

''We've got no way of knowing who has been affected in some way.

''There's no excuse for suffering in silence.''

Wilma Vanderheyden was forced from her nursing home, which was hit by the weekend deluge.

''We don't even know where we are going at the moment,'' she said.

''We lost everything.

''We were at the Novotel (Forest Resort) first, but now we're at a motel in Ballarat. But we don't know what's ahead.''

Regional and Rural Development Minister Jacinta Allan visited the Creswick Bowls Club and the Town Hall recovery centre as part of the Victorian Government's Flood Recovery Ministerial Taskforce .

Ms Allan said it was important for the government to be in touch with people at such a time.

''We're here to see first-hand how residents and business owners are holding up,'' she said.

''We can see Creswick is a strong, resilient community.''

Bronwyn Wallace, a social support worker for Hepburn Health Service, said elderly people in particular were being hit hard.

''They get to this age and they don't expect to be walking through flood water,'' Ms Wallace said.

''The elderly are lost.''

Captain Dean Sutton from the Salvation Army in Ballarat said there had not been a great demand for Salvo's assistance.

He said although food and clothes had been donated to a number of families, the demand had not been overwhelming.

United Way Ballarat has set up a Flood Relief and Recovery Fund to aid those affected.

About $20,000 has been put aside specifically for community groups.

The fund has been set up at Westpac and people are welcome to make donations at any branch.

The final Clunes recovery centre will be set up today, while the final Creswick centre will run tomorrow.

Where's the CEO and the mayor of HEpburn Shire. As usual never to be seen or heard except when there's a rate increase or another terrible waste of monies on tourism for a shire with roads that turns tourists away

Why are the elderly being shuffled around from 1 place to another???? This is traumatic enough for all affected. But to shuffle The elderly from their home town to Ballarat, and not give them some idea of where they stand is incomprahendable. The elderly, sick and disabled are the ones that should be looked after first.
