 Flood warnings for Ballarat region

Flood warnings for Ballarat region

04 Sep, 2010 10:02 AM
BALLARAT has recorded more than half the average rainfall for September in just 12 hours.

The soaking has prompted the Bureau of Meteorology to issue a severe weather warning for the region.

Latest bureau figures show Ballarat has received 46mm of rain since 8pm last night.

A further 10.4mm has been recorded to 4.30pm.

The average rainfall for September is 71.7mm.

How much rain have you had in your town? Let us know by posting a comment below.

An intense low pressure system just west of Victoria is behind the downpour.

According to the bureau, the low pressure system will continue to deepen as it moves across southwestern Victoria this afternoon to be centred near Tasmania tonight.

The low will then move rapidly away to the southeast on Sunday.

Heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms have already affected parts of northern Victoria overnight with Archdale Junction (near Avoca) recording 45mm up until 3am, and Clunes 42mm.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should not drive, ride or walk through flood water and keep clear of creeks and storm drains.

For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

More to come.

We are at Carisbrook and have had 85 mm until 9 am this morning. We are an island in the middle of a huge lake of water. We have had to move horses to higher ground and we have sheds sumerged in water.
