Four sites tipped for CBD housing

03 Nov, 2009 10:33 PM
HIGH-density and medium-density housing could be developed in four locations in central Ballarat.

The Ballarat City Council's draft plan for the central business district has identified sites in the city's north, south and east that could be used for new flats or townhouses.

They include land used for tennis courts and a car park at the Eastern Oval, and a site that takes in the Dana St Primary School at the corner of Dawson and Dana streets.

The council's CBD plan project manager Brett Davis said there was substantial capacity for medium to high-density housing in the city.

He said Ballarat's predicted population growth and rising fuel costs would, at some stage, make the projects a realistic prospect.

But the decision to develop the sites would ultimately rest with private developers and residents.

"They (developers) will make the decision as to whether this form of accommodation in the Ballarat CBD is economically viable," Mr Davis said.

IS that all ballarat residents do? whinge about absolutely everything. fish1470, How does your comment relate? Personally i would rather closer into the CBD so i could walk to work everyday and be close to public transport like the train station. Im 22 so i enjoy apartment living so where else would u suggest we build these then? Get used to it, Ballarat is getting bigger and bigger and we need to accommodate, if you dot like it, you know where the door is.

Agree but bigger is not always better if its at the cost of identity. Seems you want the melbourne life style without the melbourne housing prices, but bad news is how long do you think Ballarat can plan to mimic the melbourne life without the city costs associated with it? I dont think we need to accommodate, we need to consolidate what we have. Yes progress is inevitable and is a possotive thing providing its not just progress for progress' sake. Lets be honest the sort of professional people who can afford to pay $500,000 for a penthouse appartment dont want to live in Ballarat. Just as you say if i dont like it theres the door, if you want to live the melbourne life, move to melbourne.

Agreed Linda, but a growing population not only need to be housed they need the city to maintain the identity that drew them here. Further I see no suggestions to incorporate new schools, doctors, hospitals, police, water supplies, power supplies or any of the other infastructure things that this growing population needs.
