Fun begins for University of Ballarat O Week

23 Feb, 2012 04:01 PM
THE University of Ballarat Orientation Week activities kicked off this week at the Mt Helen campus.

Food stalls, music, tours, games and a major celebration called the Main Event are all taking place.

Up to 130 student mentors have also registered to help out the new arrivals.

They have been selected for the 2012 Mentor Program, which is into its seventh year at the university.

University of Ballarat vice-chancellor Professor David Battersby said he welcomed all new and returning students.

"The start of the teaching year is an exciting time for everyone and I encourage all students to enjoy the activities in a safe and friendly manner," Professor Battersby said.

"The mentor program is the key part of our transition program and mentors are given the opportunity to learn how to support new students as they commence university.

"All first-year commencing students enrolled in a degree at UB are allocated a mentor, who is a senior student in their course."

The university's Careers and Employment Fair will also be held at the Mt Helen campus on March 20, from noon to 2pm.

Mr Battersby, I hope there is fair warning also given to students about the liberal use and consumption of alcohol around town and the dangers of it.

Its no festivity nowadays unless there is alcohol present by the bucketload it seems.

Lots more money to spend/waste on O week now with Compulsory student union fees reinstated.

Anyone who has lost a job at the uni will be consoled that they students have the use of rodeo machines and bungee trampolines.

The emergency dept was ridiculously busy last night. The jager bombs dished out by a local venue certainly caused some havoc.
