Gay, lesbian retirement village planned for Ballan

Gay, lesbian retirement village planned for Ballan

15/07/2008 10:38:00 PM
AUSTRALIA'S first Gay, Lesbian and Transgender retirement village will be built at Ballan.

The $26 million "Linton Estate" will be made up of 120 self-contained units and a residential centre.

Developer Peter Dickson lodged plans for the village with the Moorabool Shire Council in August last year, with councillors giving the project the green light at its last meeting of 2007.

The "retirement haven", which would be located at the corner of Old Melbourne Rd and Ballan-Geelong Rd, will be officially launched at a function in Melbourne next week.

Mr Dickson declined to go into further detail about the facility with The Courier yesterday.

Moorabool Shire Mayor Dianne McAuliffe said council "doesn't necessarily have a view" on whether the development was a good thing for the town.

She said the shire's planning process did not include who would live in a facility.

"Council made a decision on a planning application for a retirement village," Cr McAuliffe said. "We don't go into the nuts and bolts of who's going to be living (there) with any of the applications we look at.

"It's a development that's received planning approval."

A range of associated outdoor facilities will also be built on the 7.5ha site, including a residents' gym, pool, bowling greens, tennis court and club house.

Four objections to the village were received by council before approval was given. Complaints centred on the land not being located in a residential zone, increased traffic on local roads and the development's distance from the Ballan CBD.

But a report prepared by council's planning office said the village was in line with Moorabool's planning scheme and was appropriate for the "rural living zone" under which the land falls. The report said Ballan contained little residential zoned land for such a village to be built within the township.

I have no objections to it at all. I have to wonder though, how with all the anti discrimination laws, it will be feasable to have something just for people who are transgender and or homosexual.

I think it’s a wonderful idea and I’m glad that it has been approved by the Moorabool Shire. I attended the City of Ballarat’s GLBTI consultations were a similar idea was discussed and suggested for Ballarat’s future development. I’m not sure if it was adopted in the Blueprint document. At the time I was unaware of the high need in the community for such facilities. It would be wonderful to have a similar development here in Ballarat as we have a large aging Gay and Lesbian population many without (genetic) families. I think the Ballarat City Council should be approaching Peter Dickson to discuss a similar development here. I believe that a similar development in Ballarat would be a profitable for developers, bring many new jobs and enhance Ballarat’s image and reputation.

As a resident of 20 years of Ballan, I fully support this development.

Sure it will bring more jobs but, would sexuality be a part of hiring? I don't think this is a good idea.

I live next to it!! And I think its a disgraceful thing to do to such a small country town,my view of trees and paddocks horses etc, is about to change dramatically to buildings and people everywhere. Let alone the fact that it is for gays and lesbians. I dont think I could set up a redneck-only retirement village. I am really peeved and now feel that I will have to make plans to sell my property (if I can as I'm not sure how many people actually want to live next door to such a great idea) and move my family elsewhere as we didn't move from the city to live next to this. We have put everything into building and moving to a small country town. So thanks what a great idea.

I have a new 18 lot sub division right in centre of the township of Ballan suitable for retirees and am happy to take enquiry from people who do not want to live in the planned village.

I don't really care what happens in Ballan, but this is discriminatory... a retirement village for specific sexuality? Are you kidding me? Let's propose a retirement village only for white supreme Aryan people? And let's make Adolf the maintenance guy ... I very much doubt that would be approved.

I'm delighted and impressed. The EMPLOYMENT opportunities are great. How can we overlook the continuing problems of our residents who have to travel further to seek employment. With the increased costs of fuel. Our younger people NEED work EXPERIENCE,closer to home. YOU can't catch "gay" .... Why shouldn't we welcome anything that helps to bring in $$$ to Ballan? Consideration and CARING for ALL poeple is the most important thing. EVERYONE deserves to be treated with dignity and respect I can't WAIT to send in MY RESUME!

I'm happy as i know many people without families to look after them. This would be fantastic for them and myself, even though I have family and a commited partner. We would like to buy into this develpoment for our ageing years. As for the town, I think it will do very well from this development. As for the less open-minded and discriminating people, who cares about your harsh comments. Get over it.

We cannot believe that the Moorabool Shire has approved such a thing. You would think that they would consider the residents of a retirement village during their permit process. Retirememnt villages are primarly for those aged 55+ and a range of issues regarding transport, access to health care, access to shops etc would have to be considered for a small rural town. It is hard to believe that the council weren't advised of the clientele of the planned retirement village in this process. We moved to Ballan from the city due to the relaxed lifestyle & country way of life. We don't want our children exposed to such a thing & is the reason we chose a country upbringing for our children. We are concerned that Ballan is going to become the next Daylesford & have grave concerns for our children and the "country way of life". The next thing you know 'those people' will want to parade in our Autumn Festival which is a family event. Very Concerned Christian Family!
