Gillard to sit for Ballarat bust

11 Oct, 2011 08:08 PM
AUSTRALIA’S first female prime minister will soon be immortalised in Ballarat’s Botanic Gardens, with Julia Gillard preparing to sit for her official bust.

After receiving at least three invitations to be added to Prime Minister’s Avenue, Ms Gillard’s office this week confirmed a sitting was being arranged to fit in with her diary. It is expected a bust of Ms Gillard will be officially unveiled within six months of the sitting.

She will become the 27th addition to the historic collection, which was created after a bequest to the city of Ballarat from parliamentarian and arts patron Richard Armstrong Crouch.

Each of Australia’s prime ministers are included in the collection, regardless of the length of their time in office.

Ms Gillard had previously been invited to sit for the bust by the City of Ballarat after deposing Kevin Rudd in June last year, and after she formed a minority government at the August 2010 election.

As speculation continues around a possible return to the leadership by Mr Rudd, the City of Ballarat destination and connections director Jeff Pulford said the process was under way.

“We’ve been advised that the Prime Minister is happy to participate, we’re now awaiting confirmation of a suitable date,” he said.

A council spokesperson said Australian newspaper cartoonist Peter Nicholson would be contacted about a possible commission for the new sculpture.

Mr Nicholson, famous for his cartoons and Rubbery Figures television series, has created busts of Malcolm Fraser, Bob Hawke, Paul Keating, John Howard and Kevin Rudd for the Ballarat collection.

So what!

This means absolutely nothing to Australians if it's a prime minister that has lost touch with it's people!

Does Mr Nicholson have sufficient material to do justice to the Prime Minister's unique profile?

There''s plenty of unemployed pigeons in Hervey Bay if you need a few to help christen the statue.

I wonder how long it will take for Ballarat's mental midgets to target the finished bust with acts of vandalism, overlooking the fact that it is part of historic record.

I think she will have plenty of spare time on her hands to be present for the unavailing. If Rudd comes back will he get a second bust?

Peter Nicholson's style has become a lot more abstract over the years , no matter what you think of the last few Prime Ministers, Keating, Howard and Rudd's busts are not good representations. I feel that as Australia's first female Prime Minister, Julia should be represented in a realistic way, not some 'palette knife' style interpretation of her. If Peter can sculpt her at least like Fraser or Hawke, that would be great, otherwise council should try a few other scultpors of note like Louis Laumen: (Sir Henry Bolte Statue at the Gold Museum & others) or Paul E Mason or Clive Murray White.

She'll have all the time in the world for a sitting soon enough. If the sculpter is willing to wait about another 12 to 18 months.

Ballarat is indeed fortunate city to have such a significant national historical collection of these sculptures. I may not admire all of the past PM's there, but it is pathetic to read many of the posts above- simplistic trash! very lame mentality!

Position it correctly and we could use it as a sundial.
