Good neighbours, good friends

RESIDENTS gathered across Ballarat yesterday to get to know their neighbours.

At Mt Pleasant, up to 100 people were expected to visit the Neighbour Day site, with the Ballarat Police youth and mobile entertainment unit, Ballarat Fire Brigade units and a sausage sizzle.

Neighbourhood Watch coordinator Senior Constable Janine Walker said it was an important day for the community to come and get to know their neighbours.

"It's extremely important to get the community socially engaged and to know who your neighbours are," she said.

"In the Central Goldfields region, 47 percent of people live alone, so this is just about getting to know who they are so you've got someone to call on."

Neighbour Day events were also held at Sebastopol, Lake Wendouree, Wendouree, Wendouree West, Beaufort and Maryborough.

Snr Constable Walker said the day was about creating a greater sense of community caring.

"The key message for residents is the community they want starts at their front door," she said.

"This has been a great opportunity for residents to come and see what the City of Ballarat, Victoria Police and Neighbourhood Watch have to offer."
