Guns found in raid

08 Apr, 2008 11:16 PM
AN alleged drug trafficker had access to a stash of firearms including a Mini-14 assault rifle, a court heard yesterday.

The Ballarat Magistrates Court heard Clifford Formosa, 32, legally owned numerous weapons he used for hunting, and the only fire-arm seized by police which he did not have a licence for was a loaded pistol allegedly found in Formosa's bedside drawer during drug raids in Ballarat last month.

Formosa, of Snake Valley, was charged with 13 offences following the raids, including trafficking a large commercial quantity of drugs.

He is accused of trafficking speed, ecstasy and ice and was described by police as the "focal point" for the Ballarat drug syndicate.

Formosa yesterday applied for bail. His brother Tyrone, who was also charged with drug offences and was accused of importing drugs to Australia from Canada, was bailed in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on March 26.

Defence lawyer Sean Cash yesterday argued that Formosa should be treated by the court in the same way as his brother.

The court heard Formosa's family was prepared to provide a property worth $200,000 as surety for his bail. Formosa is currently on a disability pension.

Mr Cash said there could be a two-year wait before the matter went to trial.

The court heard Formosa's partner was struggling to cope with her three children, including a disabled son, while he was in custody.

Senior Constable Travis Barber of the Ballarat police said he believed Formosa had been trafficking drugs for at least 18 months and it was his main source of income.

He said Formosa's mother was also a person of interest to police and a hydroponic set-up had been seized from her home.

The bail hearing was adjourned part-heard by Magistrate Fiona Stewart to tomorrow morning.
