Head of the Lake: concerns over Lake Wendouree venue

31 Jan, 2012 11:29 PM
MAYOR Mark Harris says Ballarat City Council is to blame for the state of the Lake Wendouree course for the national canoeing championships last weekend.

And he’s been forced to reassure organisers of the centenary Head of the Lake on March 4 that the lake will be up to scratch.

Australian Canoeing slammed Lake Wendouree’s course for the pre-Olympic qualifying event — the first major all-water event since the lake has refilled.

Th e sporting group said weeds and a crooked course layout were not acceptable for a national event.

Cr Harris yesterday said Ballarat City Council took full responsibility for the course’s state.

“We have lost some expertise in the management of this sort of event,” Cr Harris said.

“There were a couple of high wind days in the lead-up, and our staff had done all they could, but the course was nowhere near what it should have been.

“We didn’t get it up to scratch and Australian Canoeing were very unhappy about it and we take full responsibility for it.”

Australian Canoeing’s national performance director Richard Fox said Ballarat City Council would need to make major reassurances about the course’s state before any further canoeing events were held on it.

“There were concerns,” Mr Fox said.

“Officials from Australian Canoeing raised these with the council and competitors raised concerns too.

“It didn’t really meet the standard of a national level of competition. We were really committed to it (a Ballarat venue) but it didn’t meet the expectations we had.

“It takes a bit of time to get it right and the council ran out of time.”

Mr Fox said the course lanes for the Sprint Series GP2 event were not set straight and weeds were a particular problem for competitors.

However, he also praised Ballarat as a venue — particularly for its accommodation and accessibility — and said there had been a lot of support for the regatta.

“It’s fair to say we will evaluate holding future events in Ballarat but we would need to get some reassurances from the council.

“You would like to think they would review it and be looking to say ‘yes, we can fix all those things’.”

Australian Canoeing’s criticisms have also raised concerns Lake Wendouree may not be ready for the 100th Head of the Lake regatta on March 4.

But Ballarat Associated Schools executive officer Sharyn Canny said the five schools involved had met with the council this week.

“We were reassured any problems would be dealt with,” Ms Canny said.

Cr Harris said there were a lot of community concerns about Head of the Lake. But he said the event was “completely safe” in Ballarat.

“The progress with the schools has been great. We will be judged harshly if it doesn’t happen,” Cr Harris said.

Geelong Rowing Association yesterday confirmed the Barwon River was still “tentatively” booked in case an alternate venue was needed. However, a spokesman said it was not expected the event would be held in Geelong.

No surprise from the city council! Same thing happened with the recent Under 18 'NATIONAL' cricket championships. Council went to great trouble to get the champs here and then destroyed the city's 'premier' oval by holding a beer festival on it of all things.. Hmm Drunks or Sports that would put the town on the map. I know which i would rather!

BCC had the chance to dredge the lake and deepen it when it was dry getting rid of 99% of the weed. Instead they chose to believe they needed all the weed for future aquatic life!!!! Not sure whose advice that was but clearly they didn't know what they were talking about. Now the BCC and we the rate payer are wasting many $1000,s in costs to cut back this regrowning hazard .Cheaper by far to cancel the canoeing and rowing , drain the lake and dredge it or dredge it from a barge, dig up the 150yrs of silt and weed .BCC, spend the money, dig up the weed, do the community a service for once.

Maybe it should have been done while the lake was empty? How does the council check the accuracy of the work done? SKIN DIVERS.

Maybe at last we have a real Mayor rather than a representative of the officers!

How soft is this? Spending much toooo much time on who's getting what cushy office in the new building? Dispense with their services the lot of them, & vote in some people with expertise in appriopriate areas. Hell you've had a decade to get it right. Where is all your research & planning in readiness for when the lake filled. Where are all your reports, & consultants advice on what to do & where to go with it all when the time was right. You, as our council have failed your town in what we all see as the most important feature our fair city has! Wake up & do what you you were elected for!

The council has "lost some expertise" boy what an understatement. The expertise is in the community and has continued to offer sound advice of which the council has continued to ignore. The council officers have a lot to answer for and it is so sad our new mayor has to take the blame for their mistakes.

Yet another failing of this present council. By the time the community get the opportunity to vote them out there will be nothing left in Ballarat.

Having visited Warrnambool and Portland over the summer, the contrast between Ballarat is clearly visible. Ballarat is very quickly falling into decline whilst other regions are prospering.

As a resident you have got to ask...WHY?

Weeds are a problem in a 2 metre deep course? Must be tall weeds! Maybe its the floating off-cuts they're talking about. In either case someone isn't doing their job properly. Are the council galantly taking the blame because they're admitting they have employed the wrong contractors for the job? I wonder if the cost of attempting to transform this swamp into an international rowing venue will really benefit the ratepayers. What is the cost to date Cr Harris?

How refreshing - a mayor who is prepared to acknowledge when council has stuffed up. No buck-passing, no dodging, no spin. He's just gone way up in my estimation. Such honesty has been sadly lackig from council in recent years.

Good to see the council taking the blame. Now time to see if they can step up and actually fix the problems. A place to start will be having a weed cutter working all the time!! I notice that the cutters went MIA after the first cut and only came back when the weeds had regrown!!

Maybe they can start by doing away with the contractor cutting the weeds. The weeds have always needed cutting so why dont the council go out and purchase thier own weed cutter. In my view it is no different to having a street sweeper.

Be pro active this time and dont let them grow back again.
