Humffray Street speed sign still down

Humffray Street speed sign still down

09 Feb, 2012 06:20 PM
A SIGN advising cars to travel at a speed of 50km/h in the accident-prone Humffray Street South will be back up as soon as possible, City of Ballarat said.

The sign, was knocked off when four teenagers crashed into a power pole near the corner of Humffray Street South and Bradshaw Street in November last year.

While two of the teenagers walked away from the accident with minor injuries, the other two remained trapped in the car.

Emergency crews worked for four hours to rescue the last of the trapped teenagers.

Resident Pat Murphy said it was concerning the sign hadn’t gone up since the accident.

Mr Murphy and his family were one of the first at the scene of the accident.

“I am concerned that people won’t know to slow down and continue to speed around the bend,” Mr Murphy said. “It is another accident waiting to happen.”

Residents say the street is notorious for speeding drivers.

Last month, The Courier revealed that according to a City of Ballarat speed survey every hour, one or two drivers were travelling more than 30km/h over the speed limit on the street.

The survey, which was released to the paper under a Freedom of Information application, was conducted over seven days in July of last year. The information, gathered using a speed counter between Gladstone and Bradshaw streets, showed that hooning increased over the weekend.

A City of Ballarat spokesperson said a 50km/h speed advisory sign was attached to a Powercor pole that was damaged in a recent accident on Humffray Street South.

“An electrical authority has reinstated the pole but did not reinstall the original signs on the new pole,” she said.

“The City of Ballarat has lodged a works request for replacement advisory signage to be fixed to the pole.”

The spokesperson said the speed limit for Humffray Street South was 60km/hour.

The speed advisory sign recommends that drivers reduce their driving speed to negotiate a bend in the street.

“The City of Ballarat encourages all residents and visitors to travel the city’s roads safely and legally,” she said.

“If residents are aware of missing or damaged street signs, they are encouraged to contact City of Ballarat Customer Service at 5320 5500.”

A 50km/h sign is not going to make any difference to the morons who speed along this road. While these people hold licences and have access to vehicles there will be accidents. Mr Murphy is concerned people won't know to slow down - these people don't care and to repeat myself the sign will make no difference.

I wouldn't have thought it would have taken more than a day at the most to construct a sign...????

Bu tthen again maybe with all the planning permits and red tape these days it may take up to 2 years

'Over it' is right, these idiots are deliberately speeding along these roads, they have no intention of driving slowly or reading a sign. We have booze buses and speed cameras, yet hoons are still crashing at high speeds off their faces. The police need to be out in force at nighttime, when these hoons get out of bed and do most of their damage. Make Ballarat a safer place for us all, and get them off the roads before they kill themselves or someone else.

The sign obviously wasn't working when it was there!

It's advisory 50 speed zone, not law.

Isnt the road rule that when in a 'build up area' that the speed limit is ALWAYS 50km/hr unless otherwise signed?

If you look even further, a 'built up area' is defined by power poles every 50m.

I think you will find that this section of Hummfray Street would be classified as this. Seems to me that this is a bit of a whinge about nothing? Maybe a few people should review the road rules...

A sign is useless, what needs to happen is for the Police to get off their back sides down at the station and actually go out and book people for speeding.

Yes, I know I'm dreaming!
