A BALLARAT man who falsely set the fire alarm off at the Ballarat Police Station had his current jail sentence extended to 23 months yesterday. Simon Hansford, 34, pleaded guilty to six charges including burglary, theft and willfully giving a false fire alarm.Police Prosecutor Senior Constable Kerry Bourke said Hansford attended the Ballarat Police Station in September this year to report on bail and while he was waiting set the fire alarm off. When interviewed, Hansford said it was an accident, Sen Const Bourke said. In another incident, Sen Const Bourke said, Hansford broke into a house in Raglan St North and attempted to steal a safe but was confronted by the owner. Hansford was also involved in an attempted burglary in Dana St and the theft of a car in Grant St. Hansford's defence lawyer, Scott Belcher, said his client had committed the offences while under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The court heard Hansford was serving a jail sentence with a non-parole period of 13 months for offences including aggravated burglary. Magistrate Peter Couzens extended the amount of time Hansford would spend behind bars to 23 months. He also fined Hansford $500 and ordered that he pay $343.02 in restitution of the false fire alarm.
