Lake fire looks suspicious, says CFA

Lake fire looks suspicious, says CFA

22 Jan, 2009 11:48 PM
A SECOND fire on Lake Wendouree in less than a month is believed to be deliberately lit.

The Country Fire Authority confirmed a blaze which broke out at Durham Point, on the north side of the lake, about 4.20am yesterday was suspicious.

The fire burnt about a square kilometre of mainly fairy grass and reeds before it was brought under control about 8am.

Fighting the fire was difficult because of a lack of access for heavy fire trucks.

However, fire fighters were able to walk fire hoses out to the centre.

Some lighter all-terrain vehicles were able to move onto the lake.

During the early morning fire, residents as far away as Sebastopol called in to report the smell of smoke on a total fire ban day.

Despite the fumes and flames, joggers, walkers and cyclists were still out in force from around 6am.

Some interrupted their exercise routines to take photos and video footage of the action.

Wendouree Pde was closed to traffic between Forest and Burnbank streets for several hours while the fire was put out.

The CFA spent all day yesterday carrying out blacking works on the lake, with drifting smoke blanketing much of Ballarat, fanned by 20kmh north-westerly winds.

A CFA spokesman said yesterday police will be brought in to investigate the cause.

The spokesman said the fire could continue to smoulder in the lake bed for several days, with smoke also expected to be present for some time.

Yesterday's blaze follows a similar fire on the lake on December 30 last year, which burnt eight hectares of fairy grass and reeds.

After an investigation, it was determined Ballarat City Council staff had sparked the fire, which began about 100 metres from the northern shore, near Forest St.

It took three hours to bring under control.

Australia Day fireworks have come early ! Surely it wont be safe to hold the fireworks on Australia Day, with a lake full of fairy grass ?

A sign of modern times when we have to bring in truckloads of recycled water to put out a lake.

in 1 way this is a good thing as removes the grass and weeds from the lake if as they promised 2 yrs ago that while the lake was dry they would deepen it i feel that then we might have a lake that will not dry out in furure years with the heat remove the grass and the reeds while it is dry not just mow it down but dig them out then use the lake as it was made for the people you now have the chance to build on it to make something there that is fantastic and a draw card to the area i liked in ballas for many yrs near the lake so yes i do understand the pains of it and the great parts of it but again please think of how it can be inproved to work with boating and many other things

Perhaps any Ballarat Australia Day fireworks can be cancelled, and the $ diverted to CFA increase resources?

This is just what we need for the local council to stand up and take note! This is some one stupid enough to risk peoples lives to start a fire on a severley dry lake bed with tumbling Fairy Grass. WHY was the lake not sprayed like Learmonth and Burrumbeet, If you had explained to residents the nessessity of spraying rather than building a useless fence, then maybe someone would not have taken matters into their own hands. Wake up Ballarat City Council and Wake up residents of Lake Wedouree!! and Greeniews back off, how many animals have been injured and killed because of your interferance. Dissapointed Ballarat Resident...

Thanks for the news update; I was wondering what was going on. Woke up at about 6am here in Mount Clear, my house smelling pungently of smoke. I can only assume that the fumes headed all this way. Smelled poisonous; we were a little freaked. :P

Hmmm, perhaps they should have called in "Elvis the firefighting Helicopter" to scoop up a pile of dirt from the lake to douse the flames!
