Lake to be full by late 2011

07 Jun, 2010 11:27 AM
LAKE Wendouree will be full by late next year after the state government announced today it would inject $1.3 million towards a new solution to pipe water from a Ballarat bore.

Premier John Brumby, who joined community and business leaders from the region at a press conference in Ballarat, said the new project to fast-track filling the lake meant that regardless of rainfall and stormwater run-

off, water would begin going into Lake Wendouree from September this year, with boats to be able to return to the water from the middle of 2011.

Under the new project, the state government will fund the piping of an additional 1700 million litres of water, more than double the combined amount of water currently available for the lake from other sources.

It will be piped from Ballarat West bore directly to Lake Wendouree.

The project involves extending a pipe from Ballarat West water treatment plant to the lake as a temporary measure and the construction of a new 800 metre pipeline directly from the Ballarat West bore to Lake

Wendouree.

Brumby, How come you all of a sudden give a stuff whether the lakes full? So you do nothing for years but jump onto something you think might win a few votes? Put it in to law & order & investigate the rorting by your incompetent fools that you call a government. Hopefully Howard will be in the same dole queue as you & Rudd

What a waste of money, for the rich people to suck up the water with their bores around the lake.

Heard it all before! Anyone confident this will happen?

Is it any coincidence that all of a sudden that lake is going to be filled just before a state election? Not only that, i read with interest, that the Ballarat seats just happen to be marginal for the Labor Party. Coincidence...i think not. As a swinging voter, I am happy to see that the lake is going to be filled, but for me it is too little too late from the Labor party.

Just checking - wasn't this same announcement made before the last election as well?

Will the quality of this mix of water sustain the ecology and habitants of the lake ?? Living out west of Alfredton, the bore water used to supplement our CHW supplied drinking water is vile.

Last straw for me! What an act of environmental vandalism. Nature is telling us something about how dry it is at the moment. Rather than government changing managing this precious resource they are going to suck out our ground water and put it into the evaporation pan that is Lake Wendouree? What sort of untold damage is going to happen? A quick cynical fix to win votes. Disgraceful. I hope our civic leaders fight for what is right

1.3 millon to fill a bloody lake, yet the man who needs life saving drug, the government cant seem to find it in their hearts, i know it federal government that is the sticking point on this one, but geez it makes you shrug your head, Filling the lake wont make ballarat a nicer place for tourists and residents alike, getting rid of the scum that think the can bash people for no reason will make this town beautiful and proud to be apart of
