Lake Wendouree water level too low for Head of the Lake

03 Feb, 2012 11:00 PM
WATER is currently being pumped into Lake Wendouree to ensure it is full for the March 4 Head of the Lake regatta.

The lake is currently 260 millimetres below full, due to high winds causing substantial evaporation.

Ballarat mayor Cr Mark Harris said the lake would be topped up before the centenary rowing event using back-up water supplies from both the Ballarat North Waste Treatment Plant and possibly Paul’s Wetland.

Cr Harris said $50,000 was budgeted annually for measures designed to keep the lake water levels up.

“It’s not a big issue,” Cr Harris said.

“We have a back-up supply of potable water. We have made provisions.”

Central Highlands Water spokeswoman Nicky McMaster said the Lake Wendouree Water Supply Project was turned on in August 2009.

She said it was a joint project between the state government, Ballarat City Council and Central Highlands Water.

“As part of this project CHW provides an annual supply of Class A-plus treated re-use water to the City of Ballarat to use as a supplementary water resource for the lake,” Ms McMaster said.

“This supply is delivered to the lake on request from the City of Ballarat.”

“C HW is currently pumping water to Lake Wendouree via the 3.5-kilometre pipeline to supplement current water levels.”

The council is also purchasing a $480,000 lake weed harvester to use for periodic maintenance works.

A tender has been awarded to Aquatic Harvester Manufacturing and Sales, which will provide an integrated harvester and waste compactor truck that ca n be operated by just one person.

Cr Harris said lake weed played an important part in maintaining a healthy, living lake.

“Lake weed is essential for the ecological health of the precinct as a whole, including the prevention of blue-green algae, so it’s important that we get the balance correct,” Cr Harris said.

“Council’s contracts committee has agreed that the best option would be to purchase our own machinery that could be used whenever we need.”

Here we go again! BCC wasting Ballarat taxpayer money to hold aquatic sports on the Lake. Now we have pump in sh....ty water , waste 10s of $1000s of ratepayer taxes, buy our own weed harvester at great expense.,all because somone thought they knew best and refused the company that offered to dredge the lake when it was dry. Let's be honest, the lake is so shallow and cuttting weed is just adding to the silt problem, blaming the wind is a pathetic excuse, sure, it makes some difference but the lack of depth is the real problem. Spend your $40m and get someone in to dredge it once and for all .

Hold it in Geelong, they have much better facilities.

I know evaporation is something to take into account, but I thought they'd been draining the lake so they can get the stupid dredger to try and finish the job that should have been done when the lake was dry...The $50,000 per annum to keep the lake level up...is this going to Central Highlands Water for the class A potable water that they're pumping in? Have they stopped draining the lake now? What happened to the old weed cutter they used to have? How come its 2012 & the council are only now coming up with the idea of buying their own one for $480,000? Can we have a follow up article please?

Good idea. Raise the level of the water and the weeds won't need to be cut.............yet!

I agree with Cr Harris. Low water level in the lake is no big deal. It was a swamp, so low levels can be expected. However the lake is economically and socially important to Ballarat so it has basically been turned into a big swimming pool over the years. Pools require maintenance and top ups with water. Well worth it.

Looking at that photo and being the little fella who sat down the back for the St Pats 2nds in the early 70s, I reckon my skills would be hard pushed to steer that course. !! :).

Geelong lost Head of the River to Lake Nagambie and will never get it back. Wendouree is a reclaimed swamp with insufficient depth for most aquatic activities. Let it go back to the recreational lake it once was - rowboats, punts and small yachts.

The BCC can get spend big $$$'s to get water into Lake Wendouree, but wont let any run into Lake Learmonth for nothing................ Get rid of the new weir in Moreton's Cutting now before Learmonth dries up...........AGAIN.....!!!!

@HoppingMad, wasting money to hold aquatic sports? Are you aware of the impact these so called aquatic sports have on local businesses, tourism, city revenue? Silly individual

@Pongy, you have rowed the course at Geelong and you know it is definately better do you? 4 lanes wide and 1500m long is better to you? Did you know that the Barwon has a massive Blue Green Algae problem? You really have no idea!

I'm sure if it was 100th anniversary of the local football or cricket leagues, the taxpayers wouldn't mind too much. You people really have no idea what the Head of The Lake means to many

AND, furthemore, you have no idea what the Lake actually means to Ballarat. One of the only things the City has going for it, and you dont appreciate it. Sometimes I think people really need to do something else with their time other than consistently complain. Well done to the BCC for keeping the Head of the Lake here for its 100th Anniversary. As an ex-student of one of the 5 schools, I personally know many many people returning from around the country for reunions and celebrations on the return to the Lake. Ballarat will reap the rewards of a great weekend.
