Leonards Hill wind farm: first turbine goes up

20 Mar, 2011 10:32 PM
WINDY days will be welcomed with open arms in the future at Leonards Hill.

The small town, 10 kilometres south of Daylesford, became the first town in Australia to establish a community-owned renewable energy project on Saturday.

A 110-metre wind turbine was raised, to the delight of onlookers and the 1600 owners of the wind farm.

More than $8.7 million was invested by collective members as part of the $13 million project.

Hepburn Wind is behind the project – which is expected to generate more power than Daylesford uses each year.

Members of Hepburn Wind who invested in the project will share in the proceeds of the sale of electricity and the remainder of the money will be put towards a community fund.

Hepburn Wind member Kate Allsopp said she “loved the idea of the community owning our energy source”, while fellow member Belinda Martin said she “can’t wait to see our turbines spinning”.

Chairman of Hepburn Wind Simon Holmes a Court said the project was a culmination of six years’ hard work.

He said it was fantastic to see a community develop it without waiting for the government.

“Our project is not about building two wind turbines, it is about empowering local people to become engaged and active participants in responding to the challenge of climate change,” he said.

About 12,200 tonnes of CO2 are expected to be displaced each year.

This report should read at the start that windy days will be welcomed by inner city suburban greenies.

Wind will certainly not be welcomed by those living at Leonards Hill, especially only 500mts from the turbines.

thanks for the wonderful community effort in stopping the four bullies at Smeaton trying to do the same thing across the west of the shire. This scam is well exposed now

the poor residents that have to live near these things. The people investing in this aren't even local to make the situation worst

What a marvellous idea! I am 100% supportive of these windfarms.

I think they look really "cool" as my nephew says.

Windmills are a distinctive feature of Holland's landscape, maybe one day Victoria will be know for its windfarms. I wish them all the best.

This was a great day for the community and the members of the co-operative. There was a real sense of excitement among the people I spoke to about being part owners of a project that was doing something positive about generating clean safe renewable energy at the local level.

What a fantastic achievement the Hepburn Wind project is.

The effort put in by local community members to get this up and running is quite awe inspiring.

Every day members of the local community developed expertise in managing large projects, reading complex legal documents, negotiating the purchase of million dollar turbines and power purchase agreements. All because they wanted to respond to the challenge of climate change in a meaningful way and believed in the benefits of community owned renewable energy.

Our district should be proud to have such a capable and dedicated group of people as part of community.

Congratulations to everyone involved. This is a great example of people taking control over their own infrastructure and benefiting from their hard work and initiative. Rather than being victims of rising power prices, these people will see higher returns on their investment. I'd love to see projects like this all over regional Australia.

Great, congratulations Hepburn Wind! Very exciting to see our region generating more of our own renewable energy.

Great that the community will be benefiting too.

something like 1,600 people invested in this project. It is clearly well supported by many in the community.

Its a shame that some 'antis' can only resort to name calling. The rest of us are happy to have the inspiration of the Hepburn project. Well done to you all.

Being a local supporter and member of the co-operative I think it is terrific to see that unlike the politicians, local communities are taking doing something for our climate serious. Good on ya Hepburn Wind.
