Lexton Plains FL grand finals postponed

04 Sep, 2010 09:58 AM
LEXTON Plains Football League grand finals scheduled for today have been postponed as a result of heavy rain across Western Victoria.

The LPFL called off the football and netball grand finals at 8.10am after learning of road closures across the region and on safety grounds.

The grand finals have been rescheduled for Eureka Stadium Ballarat on Sunday, September 12.

LPFL secretary Rod Ward said road closures meant players from Natte-Bealiba and Navarre were unable to get to Ballarat in time for games.

He said there were also welfare concerns for players, officials and supporters travelling in the predicted inclement weather conditions and hazardous road conditions.

Maryborough Castlemaine District Football League semi-finals scheduled for today and tomorrow have also been put back a week.

Road closures have cut access to Dunolly today, while tomorrow's venue Avoca is under water.

Ward said the Avoca River has burst its banks, resulting in the ground being flooded and water getting into changerooms.

This MCDFL preliminary final will now be played on Sunday, September 19 and grand final on Sunday, September 26.

The postponement of the LPFL grand finals will also have an impact on the Ballarat Football League grand finals.

The junior grand finals were to have been played at Eureka Stadium on Sunday, September 12.

However, the LPFL will now have use of the ground on that day.

Ward said an option to be considered by the board this week would be putting the junior grand finals back a week to Sunday, September 19 - the day after the BFL senior grand finals.

Is the league worried about the welfare of the players or the welfare of the bank balance??

the league needs to think before it acts, the weather conditions were expected by all, emergancy procedures should have been allready in place so teams could get in. Big implications for clubs that were doing food and drink at the venue, club b&f's and club footy trips that were/are to be held on the new date. Very little thought given here. I agree with "furious" welfare of the bank balance may have played a roll in this decision.

Some people just cant see the bigger picture after reading article I applaud the choices made by the LPFL as the roads are extremely dangerous today and players safety is also a concern in this weather. Without players making it through road closures there's no game anyway..

Just wondering if those that are "furious" are from clubs in the grand final able to actually drive without road closures to the venue - perhaps you were hoping for the opposition to be disqualified for failing to arrive and be handed a premiership on a platter? Wake up, look at the bigger picture. Interesting to also note that the article immediately above the cancellation story is about a young woman dying last night in Ballarat on slippery wet roads. Puts thing in perspective, I say - congratulations to LPFL for their decision to value human safety above a game. It is, after all, just a game.

Please, please Mr Ward, hold the junior finals in Bacchus Marsh or Darley next week. We have two boys playing in GFs and then another son playing in a GF in a different league on the 19th. And it's the middle of the school holidays for Grammar kids. Do the right things by families and don't make us play a grandfinal in the holidays.

To 'Furious' I think it is quite obvious that the LPFL didnt implement a change of date for their benefit or financial gain - did you ACTUALLY read the article? Road closures and players unable to get through seems good enough reason to change the game date! After a death in this region already from flooded waterways and severe weather warnings that were issued - surely even you can see that the change was for safety reasons. The LPFL will probably loose money for doing it - but that is worth the safety and well being of players trying to attend in the wild weather and unpredictable flooding that has occured.

Bank balance? No league next year i don't think that was a consideration. Surely there are others grounds the juniors could utilize. Let them play on the Eastern oval?

wondering what would have happened if it was a home and away round, it is a winter sport besides BFL and CHFL played without too much of a problem

The ignorance shown by furious and also furious is astounding. Furious' comment about welfare of the bank balance comes from someone who obviously has no idea of the logistical nightmare that was caused by the postponement. And Also Furious’ comment “emergency procedures should have been in place for teams to get in”. is a ridiculous argument. It was not only getting in that was a problem, but how were these people going to get back home that also had to be considered. Congratulations to the LPFL for making a smart decision. Yes some people have been affected negatively by the decision, but that’s life. Suck it up and Deal with it.!
