MAGISTRATES COURT

31 Mar, 2005 10:48 PM
A BALLARAT woman who admitted stalking her psychologist, harassing a man with prank telephone calls and falsely accusing her father of rape was given a community-based order yesterday.

Ballarat Magistrates Court heard Katherine Anne Morris made a number of nuisance telephone calls to her psychologist and sent her a parcel containing sexually explicit material between January 9 and February 6, last year.

The 32-year-old also instructed a male friend to call the psychologist on her behalf, the court heard.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Don Mackay told the court the victim was "disgusted" upon opening Morris' parcel, which contained a vibrator, sex book and number of explicit pictures.

When questioned about the offences, Morris told police: "I just wanted her to take me seriously".

Morris yesterday pleaded guilty to two counts of using a carriage service to menace or harass, one count of stalking and one count of making a false report to police.

The court heard the first two charges related to the separate telephone harassment of a man during an eight-month period in 2002, while the latter charge related to an incident in November 2003 when Morris falsely accused her

father of rape.

Defence lawyer Shivani Pillai told the court her client was a caring and vigilant mother, who suffered from an undiagnosed psychological condition.

She said Morris had experienced considerable emotional and physical trauma as a child, which had led to depression and anti-social behaviour.

Ms Pillai described her client's offending as a "cry for help" and urged the court to consider releasing Morris on a community based order.

She said Morris was receiving counselling through the Uniting Church and studying to become a teachers' aide.

Magistrate Richard Wright convicted and released Morris on a community-based order, with a condition that she perform 70 hours of unpaid community work during the next two years.

She was also ordered to pay $300 compensation.
