Man dies at Beaufort's Rainbow Serpent Festival

30 Jan, 2012 12:15 AM
A 34-YEAR-OLD Epping man died at the 15th Rainbow Serpent Festival at Beaufort from unknown causes.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the cause of the death was not believed to be suspicious.

“Police are aware of the death of a 34-year-old man from Epping at the festival,” she said.

“Police and paramedics were called to the festival at 1.30am.

“But the death is not believed to be suspicious.”

Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the man was already dead when emergency crews arrived at the scene.

“An ambulance crew attended in the early hours of Sunday morning,” Mr Mullen said.

“Ambulance Victoria paramedics determined that the patient was deceased.”

A 25-year-old was also taken to the Ballarat Base Hospital in a serious but stable condition on Saturday night, he said.

The man was treated for a drug overdose.

“We were called at 7.30pm on Saturday night at Jack Smith Lane, Lexton,” Mr Mullen said.

“The man had suffered a cardiac arrest, he wasn’t breathing.

“We resuscitated the person at the scene and took him to the Ballarat Base Hospital in a serious but stable condition.”

The Victoria Police spokeswoman said they were generally pleased with the overall crowd of 15,000.

“No drugs have been found at the event by the police,” she said.

“Overall the crowds have been well-behaved.”

Only one man, she said, had been ejected for behavioural issues from the festival, which concludes today.

More than 100 artists across a range of music genres, including progressive trance, electro, house, breaks, dub and ambient were at the open-air festival, which started in 1987.

The Rainbow Serpent Festival has grown from a small gathering in a secluded clearing to a permanent site that accommodates thousands of people.

Organiser Tim Harvey earlier told The Courier he expected people to travel from all over Victoria to attend this year’s event.

A lot of people complain about this event, but generally speaking the people are far more well behaved, than other local events.

Things like the Ballarat cup, are always littered with fights and other stupid drunk behavior, and that event only runs for 1 day. Rainbow serpent runs for almost a week, with fare less incidents.

I went to Rainbow for the first time over the weekend, and have to say it was by far the most relaxed atmosphere I've ever encountered at a music festival. People were chilled and friendly and I didn't see any fights (or even arguments to be honest).

Yeah, I'd say about 90% had some kind of drug in their system but if you want proof that it isn't so much drugs that cause bad behaviour as it is ALCOHOL, then taking a trip to Rainbow one year will do just that.

No drugs?...this is drug city galore...the reason there are no fights because the crowd is too high on drugs to get into any fights...Everyone knows this festival is full of drugs and the police know it...I wonder why they don't do anything about it?????

Rainbow Serpent is an excellent event. But no drugs at the event? Come on, who are they kidding?

have been to rainbow before, and i myself do not do drugs, but i can tell you now it is a much better/safer place than any friday/saturday night out in ballarat, all you experts that get on here with no idea from the comfort of your own homes need to put a lid on it, the city of ballarat on any weekend night is littered with people on drugs wanting to casue nothing but trouble, your police regime would be better of on camp street than at beaufort

15,000 people. (Police figure, not mine.)

Not one arrest. One person ejected for mis-behaving. One person treated by Ambulance on a hot Saturday night at a festival with 15,000 people or part thereof in attendance. The Police said they were "pleased with the overall behaviour.."

So what's your problem, Maxi, Heather, Truth will come out?

I absolutely guarantee you ambulance and Police were kept busier in Ballarat on Saturday night, and there would not have been anything like 15,000 in town.

If Beaufort's happy to host Rainbow, what's the problem?

yep. this festival is excellent proof that the link between alcohol/drugs and violence is NOT causal. i also did not witness a single argument for the whole five days

Dont you just love people focussing on "OMG, There wuz all these people on Drugs, something should be done about ! Where were the Police/Dogs", then heading off for a beer at the local watering hole, perhaps with a bit of biffo with that larrikin who was eyeing off your chick all night ?

Meanwhile, 15,000 hippies dance and smile and have fun, it should be illegal ! They're having more fun than we are !
