Man stabbed in Ballarat's nightclub precinct

18 Mar, 2010 10:13 AM
A BATESFORD man is in hospital after being stabbed in Ballarat's nightclub precinct early this morning.

Police said the man, 22, was stabbed in the stomach when he went to the aid of a stranger who was being assaulted in Police Lane.

Detective Senior Constable Jeff Highthorn said a Ballarat man, 20, was eating a tray of chips and gravy in Police Lane when a woman stole his wallet about 2.30am.

The man chased the woman, but was confronted by two male friends of the woman.

Det Sen Const Highthorn said the pair punched the man in the face, knocking him to the ground.

The Batesford man and others, who were inside the nearby Gravy Spot, then confronted the attackers in an attempt to help the victim.

One of the men then produced a knife and stabbed the Batesford man once in the stomach.

Det Sen Const Highthorn said the man was taken to Ballarat Health Services Base Hospital with a single stab wound, about 2-3cm wide, to the stomach.

He is now in stable condition.

The victim of the initial assault received cuts and bruising to his face.

The knife is believed to have been a pocket knife with a 10-12cm blade.

Det Sen Const Highthorn said police cordoned off the area this morning and had viewed CCTV footage.

Police investigations are continuing.

More to come.

So Geoff HOWARD, is this the safe City of Ballarat you talk about that doesn't need anymore Police?

Another safe night on Ballarat's streets? It's beyond a joke, jail for offender is only option.

We are currently seeing the death of local man Rhys Marshall being investigated before the courts. This recent stabbing could easily have been another fatality. My son (who has never been in a fight in his 26 years) was recently assaulted in Melbourne when 2 drunken morons accosted his fiance. The ramifications of this anti social behaviour are frightening. The courts currently have an opportunity to set an example to those who think it's okay to belt or kill someone.

There is something very chilling about the horrible coincidence of a poor mans violent death in May last year just now being played out in court. Together with the violent stabbing last night both taking place in "POLICE LANE". Our city is so out of control when its comes violence in our streets that I believe can be attributed in a major way by the lack of police and police presence in our city due to the failings of this labor government

Absolutely disgraceful behaviour!!! It is well known even in other states that Ballarat is a violent gangland ghetto, and incidents like this continue to happen due to a severe shortage of police. They boys and girls in blue do a tremendous job, but simply cannot be everywhere with the physical and human resources available to them! The dangerous, violent and criminal nature has been allowed to deteriorate to such an extent that I have chosen to move away, as have a few others I know. It is hardly a place to enjoy life or raise a family, and cannot see it being so in any forseeable future unless the police are better resourced and the justice system wakes up. I will not consider moving back to the once pleasant city I knew it as, until law and order has been restored and there is a shift in mindset with these degenerates.

As a regular nightclub-goer about 10 years ago, I am thankful that I now no longer feel the urge to regularly paint the town red, and prefer to drink with friends and family either at home or at venues with older, more docile clientele. I would much rather go out in fear of the police being too heavy-handed (but safe in the knowledge that those doing the right thing won't have any issues) than at the mercy of the type of clientele that frequent the streets in the wee hours. Getting people out of the CBD after closing time has always been a problem - the Safe Taxi Rank that operated on the Myer corner a few years back seemed to work because people soon learnt that all the Taxis would service there first. I feel for the Police, who are damned if they do and damned if they don't. I wish someone would take a closer look at the bars and clubs that throw petrol on an already-smouldering fire by serving clearly-intoxicated people - Responsible Service of Alcohol my foot!
