A MARYBOROUGH-based company has been fined more than $5000 for dumping thousands of litres of waste blood. Biac Protein Pty Ltd recently admitted to failing to compost the material at a liquid farm on the Maryborough-Dunolly Rd. The company collects animal blood from across regional Victoria, which it separates to extract protein. An EPA investigation found the company had dumped 50,000 litres of waste blood onto the land with a small amount of straw used to compost the material. EPA's north-west regional manager Jeff Cummins said the company had made no effort to reuse the liquid waste or seek an appropriate form of disposal. He said the EPA became aware of the incident after the Central Goldfields Shire Council received reports of odour coming from the farm."The company admitted they had failed to compost the material and subsequently arranged for, and paid for, clean-up of the site," he said."The community takes a dim view of these sorts of dumping incidents and we expect companies to properly manage their waste stream in an environmentally sustainable manner."To report incidents, phone the EPA's pollution watch line on 1800 444 004.
