Mild conditions continue

31 Jul, 2005 10:21 PM
A WARMER-than-usual August is expected to top off a mild winter in Ballarat this year.

The Bureau of Meteorology recorded mild July temperatures with an average of 11.4C.

The 30-year average for the month is 10C.

Farmers were given little relief from the drought, with rainfall 40mm down on average.

Ballarat recorded 26.4mm of rain over 18 days.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Peter Blake said weather patterns had been similar across the state, with the exception of East Gippsland that recorded unusually high rainfall on July 10.

"The number of days with rainfall in Ballarat was close to average, but the rainfall was low," Mr Blake said.

"That means there were a lot of days with drizzle and short showers.

"The temperatures were a bit warmer than the average, with a minimum of 3.5C and a maximum of 11.4C."

Average rainfall is expected in August after 83mm fell in the same month last year.

"We hope for average rainfall for the next couple of months, which should help the farmers," Mr Blake said.

"As far as temperatures go, it's looking like they'll be slightly warmer than average for the rest of winter.

"Usually we get a bit more sun in August and that helps it feel warmer."

This week temperatures of 13 or 14C are expected before a cold burst at the end of the week, with 9C the expected maximum on Thursday and Friday.
