Millions pledged for Ballarat region's train network

Millions pledged for Ballarat region's train network

02 May, 2011 09:18 AM
A MULTI-MILLION dollar investment in Ballarat’s rail services is expected in tomorrow’s state budget announcement.

The 2011-12 budget will be handed down in Parliament by the Treasurer Kim Wells tomorrow and The Courier understands there will be a major investment set aside for rail services in the area.

Almost $5 million is believed to have been allocated to increase train services at Wendouree and to conduct the restoration of rural train stations.

The Courier understand that after 17 years in train travel wilderness, Talbot Railway Station will be brought back to life with a $2.5 million revamp. Trains between Ballarat and Maryborough will soon stop in Talbot once a day travelling each way, which has not happened since 1994.

Community groups and residents have been campaigning for Talbot to be included as a train stop since passenger trains returned to Maryborough in July last year.

The Courier also expects that the number of trains running in and out of Wendouree station will almost double as part of a $1.6??million commitment over four years.

Under current timetables, trains stop at Wendouree 73 times each week, a number which will almost double.

An additional 68 trains will be added to the service, with increased late-night services to be included in the 141 weekly services.

Currently, people wanting to get to Wendouree station late at night need to get off the train at Ballarat and find a taxi.

But under the proposed funding, it is believed the funding allocation would see the last train from Southern Cross at 11.38pm travel

through to Wendouree and arrive at 1am.

It is also expected that $700,000 will be set aside to upgrade the Ballan Railway Station.

The Baillieu government was criticised recently when it added Ballan to its express Ballarat to Melbourne service, adding five minutes to each express journey.

The Courier is asking residents to “Express Yourself” by visiting www.thecourier.com.au to highlight community desire for better train services in the future.

I'm a little bit excited but will wait for the budget to be really excited, especially if there are increased Wendouree services...

This is good news that the railways are going to get more money in the first Liberal budget, especially more trains to and from Wendouree. I do hope that the BCC and the local parlimentary members for Ballarat point out that unless they improve the train travel times to and from Ballarat to the city, the governments often expressed wish to decentralise Victoria's population and take traffic off the roads at peak hour is not going to work unless they improve travel times to and from Melbourne not lengthen them.

The Liberals have a lot of nerve re-opening stations THEY closed down and then expecting a pat on the back. Never trust a Liberal when it comes to country trains.

I personally would be happier if people weighing in at 150 kg plus weren't allowed to even board the train!

I'm sick of being pressed up against the window by some elephant impersonater.

Good to see trains returning to country stations... the most noteworthy feature of this story is the upgrade of Ballan station. hopefully this is the promised 2nd platform and passing loop, which would allow more trains per hour to run. more trains per hour is far more important than expressing stations that should never have been passed over - who cares if your trip takes 5 minutes longer than you think you are entitled to? it still beats taking the car on the western fwy...

Good moves: Public transport needs to be competitive with the alternatives in terms of time, cost, and convenience... the v/line trains get a tick in the first two boxes in this regard, and a big red X in the third box... why should we be spending our taxpayer money to make trains run even faster, when clearly the most important investment to start with is making them run more often... Like I said, the trains are already time and cost competitive with private motoring, now we need to invest to make them competitive in terms of convenience (flexibility)... this means investing in more passing loops, more rolling stock, and more train drivers... there are so many things more important that we should be spending our money on ahead of faster trains...

I can't beleive SvetlanaBabe would lower her standards so far as to travel by train with other commoners. Maybe her (2nd hand) European sports car was being serviced. And to all the people who constantly criticise Ballarat, just be grateful SvetlanaBabe no longer lives here.

This sounds all to similar to the Government promising to bring the Ballarat-Geelong line back to life.

I wonder if this is more Fiberal Lies from Ryan, and Bailout Ted. So far they have done nothing at all for Victoria except run cattle in and out of the National Park. So where is this supposed money coming from i ask? and what a cheek they have after all it was the Fiberals who closed the Train stations down in the first place, and as someone said pat themselves on the back. It looks like more spin, and crap from the Lieberals again.

$700,000 for a station upgrade at Ballan?

Going by previous government costings and project spending, I'll have a stab in the dark and suggest Ballan is shortly to get some new planter boxes at the front of the station.
