Miners Rest man dies in Gippsland crash

22 Jan, 2012 11:17 AM
A MINERS Rest father of one was killed instantly yesterday in a high speed, head on collision in Gippsland.

Jason Govan and his wife Rhiannon were travelling along the Princes Hwy near Morwell just after 9am when a car travelling on the wrong side of the highway ploughed into them.

Mrs Govan was airlifted to The Alfred hospital in Melbourne in a serious condition.

The collision followed a police chase of the other vehicle that was abandoned just prior to the collision.

The driver of that vehicle also died at the scene.

The collision, the fifth death in two months linked to police chases, is expected to prompt new calls for tighter regulation or bans on police pursuits.

Police said a 42-year-old Morwell man was spotted speeding through the town centre about 9am, with the officers backing off when the pursuit was deemed too ''unsafe'' to continue.

The car reportedly sped down the Princes Freeway the wrong way for nearly a kilometre before it struck the Govans' vehicle.

The couple are beleived to be parents to an 18 month old boy who was not with them at the time of the collision.

I knew Jason. He was a wonderful father and husband, and a great guy. He just did everything right. He didn't deserve to die, and his wife and son didn't deserve to have him taken away from them.

I was shocked when I heard the news. My thoughts and prayers go out to you Rhiannon and your family during this horrable time. I did not know Jason well but from what you said about him at work he was a lovely man and I know he was a good husand and father taken too young.

To die at a young age is sad. To be killed in a senseless car crash is a tragedy from which the family will never recover.

I'm involved locally with the CFA. Police broke off the chase when the driver started driving the wrong way up the first Morwell exit; this is a kilometre odd two lane exit ramp. He then proceeded along the freeway at high speeds for approximately two kilometres, dodging cars until the accident.

When the chase was terminated, at the roundabout, police were dispatched from Moe to come along the freeway. They were among the first on scene and called it in to the fire service.

Unfortunately given the location there was no chance for him to evade by the time Jason saw the oncoming car. RIP.
