Mona supports push to fill Lake Wendouree

15 Mar, 2010 02:56 PM
BALLARAT Olympian Steve Moneghetti has thrown his weight behind the Fill the Lake Campaign, saying he will financially contribute to refilling the city icon.

Moneghetti, who recently returned from Commonwealth Games talks in India, described the current dry lake as the ''laughing stock'' of the city and urged the community to back to the campaign to refill it.

''I can't count the number of times I have travelled out of Ballarat and people have commented on the dry lake. It's a laughing stock, a joke that there's no water in it,'' Moneghetti said.

''The lake is my spiritual home and I would love to see water back in it.''

Moneghetti is supporting the campaign to buy a water right for the 3500 megalitres needed to refill Lake Wendouree. The campaign was launched last week by Ballarat businessman Graham Wilkie.

I wont be spending any money on the lake. The Council killed the lake when they killed of the swamp area and stop the storm water running into the lake. because

...and another person who lives near the lake wanting it filled.

I live nowhere near the lake and I will be contributing to its refill, it is so depressing seeing the lake look the way it does, I feel sad every time I drive past. Looking at water gives people a sense of wellbeing and that is something I'm really looking forward to.

Of course he supports it... he lives there too. Find me the number of people surveyed in Sebas or Redan who are happy for their tax dollars to be spent in this way, then you may have a reasonable sample to represent the people of Ballarat!

Stop this possible blatant waste of public money and water. As anyone who has live on a farm with a shallow dam or irrigation channels will tell you, water evaporates, why is the governmant spending so much money to cover irrigation channels. Wake up people of Ballarat , while it is a nice idea to have a full lake it is totally impractical. I would rather spend my money on other attraction in Ballarat.

I am a little disappointed at the standard of reporting on this issue. Its more a push from the Courier rather than unbiased reporting of the issues. What is the role of the press? Growing support....don't think so on the numbers game. Now that restrictions are eased waste the water...don't think so. Get stuck into the CHW because they are un Ballaratarian and need to charge what it costs. Poor reporting. People behind the move to fill the lake don't care about the cost they said. But then appeal to council, CHW and Govt to put up the cash. I would love to see the lake full, as a long term resident. But its irresponsible environmentally and financially. It does not stand the scrutiny thats required and represents only a mournful cry to return to the past. Be careful what you wish for it may turn out to be the worst decision in a long time.

maybe mona can pay for it and he and his family can stop using water until they and the rest of the supporters of this stupid plan have saved the 3500 megalitres required

a dry recreational lake is the laughing stock of the city? Lucky it wasn't the swan lake that was dry then Ballarat would be the laughing stock through the mismanagement of stupid activities like this. But that shouldn't worry the people of lake wendouree as they dont live on water front property near swan lake. as they say Out of sight out of mind. I wonder how many people who walk around the lake know how low the water level is? maybe hook the water supply of the residents around lake wendouree to the swamp they so dearly want to fill with good drinking water and see how they like the taste of muddy water. It was only until the lake went dry that Ballarat residence finally woke up to the realisation that the state was in a major drought. until water levels are back above 75% should the lake be filled. if only we put as much effort into conserving water as we do in wasting it....
