IT WAS not goodbye but a last hello as three members of the same family, killed in the fires that ravaged Kinglake two weeks ago, were farewelled in Ballarat yesterday.More than 900 mourners packed the Wendouree Centre for Performing Arts to pay their respects to May McIver, 84, and married couple Greg and Judy McIver, both 59, who died at their Strathewen property.Three generations of the McIver family have attended Ballarat Grammar, with second cousins still at the school today. In a service that drew lots of laughter, but also tears, all three were remembered as generous, sporty and community minded. In a eulogy to May, Annabel Meek paid tribute to a woman who wanted the best for her four children. The family sometimes struggled financially to send all the children to Ballarat Grammar, where Greg excelled at athletics and won the H M Johnston Memorial Trophy for the 100m sprint.May was remembered fondly for her different thoughts and philosophies on life."Whipping up a batch of scones can solve most problems," Ms Meek said."And one can never use too much Glad Wrap. You lived a long and wonderful 84 years."Greg, who served as a radio operator with the 3rd Royal Australian Regiment in the Vietnam War, was honoured by fellow veterans with a rendition of the Last Post."Greg ... if something broke down he would resort to shouting at it and kicking it and then would call for Judy," former Ballarat Grammar boarding house master Rob Olston told the crowd.Judy, a theatre nurse at Ballarat Base Hospital, was remembered for trying to tan her legs when marching in the 1960s and always concerned with her looks.
