Ballarat murderer's parole cancelled

24 Nov, 2009 11:41 PM
CONVICTED murderer Paul Aaron Haseloff has had his parole cancelled a day before he was to face the parole board.

The Ballarat man was granted bail in Ballarat Magistrates Court on Monday after he was arrested and charged for allegedly committing dishonesty and drug crimes while on parole.

He was scheduled to appear before the parole board for a review this morning.

The 37-year-old's case will now be reassessed at a later date.

The parole board made the decision to cancel Haseloff's parole at a meeting in Melbourne yesterday after it received a special report.

Haseloff was convicted and sentenced to 17 years' jail, with a non-parole period of 12 years, in April 1997 after a jury found him guilty of murdering Margaret Smith.

Haseloff breached his parole last year when he allegedly committed burglary and theft offences.

He was back behind bars until April this year.

But since his latest release on parole, Haseloff has been charged with further offences.

He could now be jailed for his maximum remaining parole period of four-and-a-half years.

The Office of Corrections indicated at Monday's bail application hearing that it would be recommending Haseloff's parole be cancelled at his parole board review.

The court was told Haseloff had not only been charged with further offences while on parole, but he had failed drug tests and lost his predominant support. Haseloff answered his bail yesterday before the parole board made the decision to cancel his parole.
