THE roars, grunts and snarls that make metal music might not be to everyone's taste, but for more than 100 people at Ballarat's Karova Lounge yesterday it mattered little.
The Ballarat heats of the FReeZA Push Start Battle of the Bands were held to decide who would vie for selection at a regional level to compete at the 2010 Push Over Festival.
Among the bands competing for selection last night were Chase Nation, The Dreamcatchers, Elaine Avenue, Empire in Peril, The Howl and Pioneers of Good Science.
The bands performed across a wide range of genres from heavy metal to pop, and had 20 minutes to make their impression on judges who ranked the performances based on musical ability, song writing and recording potential.
City of Ballarat youth project officer Shaun Adams said the competition provided an opportunity for struggling bands to get their names into the wider music scene.
"This is a good opportunity for them to take it to the next level," he said.
"Neon Love won this competition a few years ago and they have gone on to other things like radio play on Triple J and have been exposed nationally."
