 Naked photo causes a stir

Naked photo causes a stir

21/08/2008 1:26:00 AM
A PHOTO showing Roland Rocchiccioli wearing nothing but a Eureka flag has caused a stir within Ballarat and beyond.

Contracted as the City of Ballarat's artistic director last year, Mr Rocchiccioli has been a topic of conversation since arriving in the city.

Some residents have publicly questioned the need for his role with council, the amount he is being paid and what results he has achieved for the city so far.

The photo of a naked Mr Rocchiccioli draped in the Eureka flag in "The Courier" prompted interest from radio stations in Melbourne and Sydney.

At least one metropolitan newspaper reported calls had been made for Mr Rocchiccioli to stand down. It did not say who had made those calls.

The photo ran to promote an upcoming exhibition at the gallery called "Ballarat in the Raw", which will feature locals dressed in nothing but the Eureka flag. Since then, the gallery has had more than 30 phone

calls from residents wanting to take part.

"The Courier" has received a number of letters about the photo itself and the exhibition.

While some comments posted on "The Courier" website were in favour of the exhibition, others were not so positive, with the photo being described as a "horrid sight" and a "blight on Ballarat."

"My wife and I object to this type of filth being on public display in our beautiful gallery," Jeff of Creswick wrote.

"Am I the only one who sees what is truly offensive about this photo?" JT of Sebastapol said.

Letters to "The Courier" were also scathing.

"Really, is this what the ratepayers are paying Mr Rocchiccioli thousands and thousands of dollars for?" Jean Burt, of Alfredton, wrote.

Mr Rocchiccioli has appeared on talkback radio stations in Melbourne and Sydney to explain the photo while metropolitan newspapers have also run stories on the situation.

Council CEO Anthony Schinck declined to comment on the response to the photo.

Council needs to look seriously at what they spend ratepayers money on. Near naked senior men do not get support of my rate money. How can council have this type of exhibitionist on our payroll? Fix it up and give us some tasteful art and expression such as the Lake or the Fine Art Gallery exhibitions in print. Better still still spend the money on something for the youth of Ballarat.

What is truly upsetting is the use of the Eureka flag. It represents something significant and was not designed to be covering an elderly man's genitals. Let's start to question the validity of this. And frankly those 30 people who shed their clothes should be aware they'll end up on porn sites for the world to 'enjoy'. Jeff

I haven't seen the naked Eureka photo but saw the comments and article online, I am originally from Western Victoria, now living in WA. My late husband and I believe deeply in the Eureka flag and spirit and visited the Eureka site and museum together. I draped the Eureka flag on my husband's coffin. Without viewing the photo, I can see no problem with identifying this symbol with the human spirit. Please email me a copy of the photo.

It appears that the City of Ballarat are on a winner with the appointment of Roland Rocchiccioli as artistic director. He has, with his latest stunt, created publicity (free) in all of the major capital city media in Australia!

Another exhibition on the the Lake, seriously? Trying something new for a change will probably give people more reason to visit Ballarat, there is only so much 'lake appreciation' one can take. Don't even get me started about Sovereign Hill appreciation. Both of which are great once or twice for a visit, but shouldn't always be the focus for bringing people to Ballarat. I say well done for being bold.

The fact that this has caused a bit of a stir, and that it has been picked up by intra and interstate media shows what an excellent idea this was. Talk about raising the awareness of art in Ballarat! Sounds like Roland is doing a great job and worth every penny he is being paid. Top job Roland!

At least the man was wearing `something' albeit a flag. Given the season's temperatures we're experiencing, however, it doesn't exactly speak highly of his common sense. Why don't people lighten up and get a life! There are more serious issues to concern oneself with. How to escape this cold, miserable winter, for instance!

I wish my life was so good that this is all I could find to whinge about. It seems that so many people find things like this to get all 'high and mighty' over, when the world has so many 'real' problems.

If it was THE Eureka flag then yep, I'd be upset too. But it wasn't. So get over it. I take more offence to the union heavies hijacking the eureka emblem and using it for their own misaligned purposes.

I myself see this photo of Roland in the raw is a disgusting image of what he thinks is art. There are some beautiful artworks in that gallery and I feel Roland is disgracing the gallery of what image it has built itself up to. Though he has done a great job in promoting Ballarat and the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery with this silly stunt, he has done so in somewhat of a demeaning way. I also feel this will draw attention away from upcoming exhibitions like Naked and the Nude which some have labeled as crude and provocative. I believe when seeing these two exhibitions next to each other you will understand what true art is all about and why the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery is known as one of the BEST regional galleries in Australia. Do not judge this beautiful place by what one man does. Shame Roland Shame shame shame
