NATIONAL TREE DAY: New life will spring up around Ballarat as volunteers improve environment

29 Jul, 2005 11:36 PM
NEW life will spring from parks, wetlands and avenues across Ballarat on National Tree Day tomorrow.

Volunteers aim to plant thousands of native trees, shrubs and grasses at Ballarat, Canadian Creek, Mt Buninyong and Redan.

They are among 20,000 that will be planted in a year-long City of Ballarat and LINCS program.

LINCS coordinator Kurtis Noyce said although the conditions had been dry, a high survival rate had been achieved from plantings due to the work of volunteers.

Last year more than 100 volunteers took part in National Tree Day in Ballarat.

Tree Day founder Jon Dee said the event was celebrating its 10th year and encouraged Australians to help plant one million native trees and shrubs during the weekend.

"We've lost billions of trees over the past 200 years, so every native tree and shrub we plant has a positive impact on our environment," he said.

"National Tree Day enables people to have a fun time planting trees that make a real difference to their local environment."

He said it was important for Australians to plant native trees and shrubs in their gardens.

Students planted trees in a school planting day at the Redan Wetland yesterday, while tomorrow they will plant at the wetland and Mt Buninyong.

The Rotary Club of Ballarat South aims to plant 280 trees at the Avenue of Honour near Dowling Rd and Chisholm Rd.
