NBN: Ballarat thrilled to megabits

18 Oct, 2011 11:17 PM
BALLARAT community leaders strongly welcomed the announcement of National Broadband Network construction in Ballarat, saying it will benefit local business, education and health.

The city edged out regional centres including Bendigo and Geelong to be named as one of 28 locations in the latest construction plan for NBN Co.

Mayor Craig Fletcher said the network would help cement the city’s reputation as a centre of information technology excellence.

“Council, through Ballarat ICT has always sought to position Ballarat at the forefront of the NBN, to maximise technology and business opportunities afforded by this development.

Cr Fletcher said the network implementation in 8900 premises would help businesses and industry maximise opportunities and help create jobs.

Helen Thompson, director of the University of Ballarat Commerce and Communications Centre, said Ballarat was ahead of many parts of Australia.

“The advantage Ballarat has is its strong ICT industry and a very strong university sector and I think from a social perspective and an economic perspective being early in the rollout process is a really exciting possibility for us. Small business, agriculture, health and export businesses will all benefit because this is an underpinning infrastructure piece for a modern economy,” Dr Thompson said.

Ballarat Health Services’ chief Andrew Rowe said access to the network would help facilitate the development of eHealth.

“BHS is excited by the possibilities of the NBN because of the speed at which it will be able to transmit large volumes of health-related information,” Mr Rowe said.

Local IT expert George Fong said the local delivery of the NBN would give the city a base on which to build a further communications structures.

what a waste of money. the speed of technology change will make this investment worthless in less than 10 years. look back in history. horse riding messengers, flashing light between hills, morse code, teletex, telegrams and more all gone. nbn will be old technology sooner than later and all just to save a few seconds. invest the money in hospitals, teachers and law and order to make use safe not encourage quicker social networking.

@ Jolly Jeff, Don't you get tired of being an compulsive whinger.. Instead of whining have a read of the article above and you will see that the NBN, will be a great Technology here for Ballarat. The Ballarat Health Services want the NBN, it will be a huge benefit to the Health system. Investing in more teachers etc you say, that is a State Government issue not a Federal One. If you want these services Improved, get on to your mate Ted Baillue. The man that has cut the services to just about everything except for his rich mate.

Jolly Jeff - once the fibre is in place technology and innovation will see it be able to carry more and more data as the algorithm improves - the fibre is just a conduit like a pipe - it will not become outdated as speed of light communication will be with us for a long time. This investment will not be worthless in ten years and even by then it will have well and truly paid for itself by the way it transforms our lives for the better.

I don't understand how this will offer us any more than we have already??

Please explain?

@ Mystery to me, It will be a huge benefit to ppl that live in the Country areas like myself. We can only get ADSL1, which is much slower that in the city. Our Internet, gets to the point that it freezes up and our internet stops. The problem with country, there is too many outdated exchanges, that are the cause of the slow internet. Why should Country ppl be denied the same Benefits as City people. With the NBN, we will no longer have to pay $ 30 a month Line rental, and if you add that up in a year it comes to $ 360 per year. We can't wait for the NBN, as the prices now are very expensive.

Thank you for the explanation. So will these first 9000 premises to be given access be the ones who are currently disadvantaged or will they start in the CBD where ADSL 2 is available leaving people like me with ADSL 1 to wait years according to the roll out plan. As someone else said, this will take so long that we will be using another form of communication by then!

What a joke - Neighbourhood Cable has been offering affordable 100mbps speeds for Ballarat for at least a year ALREADY. NBN only guarantees 12mbps and UP to 100mbps. Apart from that- NBN will be rolled up and down every street and EVERYONE will pay for it regardless of whether you want it or will use it - unlike Neighbouhood cable. How opportune for vote shy Catherine King that the 'hook up' will no doubt co-incide with the next election. NBN will not only be another force fed white elephant from the ALP but one at our expence-again

So it does pay to live in a swinging seat.

The NBN, will create a massive influx of jobs for this city. My son, is studying IT, at School at the moment, and he went in to an Open day this year at the University of Ballarat. The Lecturer's told him that ppl will be needed by the mass to help set up the NBN, in Ballarat. @Sick of Labor Spin, , are you so much against Job creation.

@sickoflaborspin The NBN has the potential to reach 1Gbps. If you seriously think that Neighbourhood Cable is vaguely comparable, then I imagine that you have only a rudimentary understanding of technology.

The NBN is expensive, it is going to take time but it is nation building infrastructure. It's really quite exciting stuff (although I'd love to know when the rest of Ballarat is scheduled for roll out)!
