ABOUT 200 Mt Helen and Mt Clear bushfire prone properties have been checked by the CFA’s home bushfire inspection service.CFA community safety manager Michael Boatman said the inspections were carried out in early December, with Daylesford properties to be inspected next week.Mr Boatman was speaking at the launch of A guide to retrofit your home for better protection from a bushfire at the Ballarat City fire station in Sturt Street. The guide has been developed by the Building Commission and the CFA to link in with the bushfire risk categories, or the Bushfire Attack Levels. It includes recommendations for owners to retrofit existing homes to withstand a bushfire up to and including BAL-29.Building Commission technical and research services senior technical advisor Marcus Collard said it gave people an idea of what they can do to protect their houses from bushfire.Suggestions include installing steel fly-wire screens, placing concrete sheeting in the sub floor and replacing glass with toughened or laminated safety glass.Grampians region fire safety officer Kevin Brown said there had been a positive reaction to the guide from the people whose properties he had inspected.
