A HEPBURN Shire councillor has initiated his own community fire information program, saying CFA information sessions are poorly attended.Cr Bill McClenaghan will tonight host the first in a series of informal bushfire preparation forums. The meeting in Glenlyon Hall will be “down-to-earth and practical”, Cr McClenaghan said yesterday.“Attendances at many CFA information sessions are fairly low and the message isn’t getting out,” he said.“I am offering alternative forums to get vital life and property-saving messages out there.”Cr McClenaghan said the council had a “major role” in community safety, emergency management and dealing with flood and fires. But Hepburn Shire Council yesterday offered a “no comment” on the program because it was not an official council function.A CFA spokesman said his organisation was unaware of Cr McClenaghan’s fire information program but added fire preparation information should come from the CFA. “It is important to make sure the correct information is being disseminated and the source of that information is the CFA,” the spokesman said. But Cr McClenaghan said his sessions would fill a much-needed gap in community fire preparation knowledge. “I’m doing my bit in supporting small rural communities that are more vulnerable than most because they live in forested areas where fire danger is extreme in summer,” he said.Late yesterday a CFA spokesman said a CFA officer would now attend to monitor proceedings and answer questions. The meeting starts at 7.30 pm.
